I read about Hamilton describing how he could hear the 5 year old screaming for his dad after he fell... that makes me want to cry, seriously. I can't take that kind of thing, anything having to do with kids, just... :(

ARLINGTON - Josh Hamilton could hear six-year-old Cooper Stone screaming for his dad after the man tumbled over an outfield railing and fell 20 feet onto the concrete below.

Firefighter Shannon Stone had called out to Hamilton for a foul ball in the second inning of Thursday night's game. Hamilton tossed it to him, but Stone fell as he reached for it and died an hour later of blunt force trauma.

Hamilton says he remembers the man's fall "like it happened in slow motion." He also remembers the screams of the little boy who came to the game with his dad in hopes of catching a ball.

Hamilton says he can't stop praying enough for Stone's family. The reining AL MVP is playing in Texas' game against Oakland tonight.

This may be the worst story I've read in a long time.

I wouldn't be able to play baseball ever again if I was Hamilton.

Jesus.

Hamilton will probably look after this kid for the rest of his life.

Jeff Passan's article made me tear up.

Maybe I'm being cynical, but the video I saw of Hamilton, all he talked about was himself and his support system in his time of need. It seemed like he thought this was all about him.

I think you're being a bit cynical, but it gave me a thought.

If Hamilton doesn't take a hand in helping look after that kid, I will hate him more than any player in any sport. I think he will and I hope I'm right.

I'll be honest, I thought Hamilton was completely apathetic. Granted that is his personality and I am sure he was incredibly saddened and distraught over everything.

Q, you're a cool dude, but WTF? Hamilton did absolutely nothing wrong. He doesn't owe that kid a damn thing. It was the fluke of all flukes.

He doesn't "owe" him anything, but at the same time, you have to be a special kind of heartless bastard to feel that you don't owe the kid something. that is just common decency.

So what? Is Josh supposed to send him a check every month? Put him through college? Land him a job in baseball? He tossed the damn ball into the stands. This occurs quite frequently. Happened to be a guy went for the ball without any regards to his personal safety and a tragedy occurred. Hey, I feel really bad for the kid. Don't get it twisted. But Q suggested that Josh is forever in debt to this kid because his father died. And anything less than that and he'll hate him? Are you serious? You don't see anything wrong with that?

I'm saying if I was involved in the death of a young kids father, I'd feel like I owe him something. I have kids close to that age. I understand the connection there. If I was "responsible" for ending that, I would feel responsible, and I think anyone who has kids should feel that way. I think it would take a Casey Anthony type to not have that feeling if you had kids. I know I would feel that I am in debt to that kid for the rest of his life if I were Hamilton. If Hamilton doesn't reach out pretty heavily, I will absolutely think he is a heartless piece of s***. That's not hyperbole either, that is the honest truth.

Feeling that way and people saying you're obligated are two totally different things. But I see where you're coming from. Hopefully you see my point as well.

I don't see "obligated" as being a bad way to put it.

Then I guess we just disagree. Josh can feel guilty, therefore in his mind he has to "make it up" to the kid even though he did absolutely nothing wrong. But I wouldn't look at Josh any differently if he simply bought the kid and his family some free tickets to a dozen games or so and that was it. Josh has his own family and his own life. He doesn't have to support a kid because a tragedy happened through no fault of his own.

I think that was a combination of reading Passan's article and it being pointed out how Hamilton talking about he he been effected, which is fine, he should.

Obviously, Hamilton owes him nothing.

But then he talks about how he'll hear the kids screams all his life.

But the kids dad is gone, fluke or not, and most people would in Hamilton's spot would feel responsible. And he shouldn't feel guilty, like you said it was the fluke of all flukes. But Hamilton should at the very least work with the Rangers to set up a college fund for the kid.

It's like when Adenhart died, Hunter went to Adenhart's parents and told them that Adenhart's little brother could come to the clubhouse and stay with any of the players. It was like they were trying to be surrogate brothers. While Hamilton shouldn't be a surrogate father, he should at least help make sure the kid can get through college/

Hamilton wasn't "responsible" for his death. So he'll be looked upon poorly if he's not sending million dollar checks to the kid's house? Come on. Hamilton doesn't have to be this kid's father figure, that's ridiculous.

It doesn't have to be money.

As stupid as it sounds, it was indeed through some fault of his. If I toss a ball to a guy who's standing on a corner and it's slightly low and he reaches for it, causing him to stumble into the path of a truck, I initiated the sequence. I didn't mean to do it, but I caused it.

I absolutely think Hamilton should step in and help this kid. He's not legally obligated to do so, but he should want to do so as a human.

No one's denying he wasn't involved with what happened, but there's no fault. Come on...how far do you want to track it back?

Who hit the ball that went to Hamilton? Who threw the pitch allowing him to hit the ball to Hamilton? How about the people that built the railing at that height, even if it meets standard? The people who made the decision to put the electronic scoreboard there and have a gap? You could go on and on.

So what if a player rips a foul ball into the right field stands and the ball hits a fan in the eye and kills him/her? Is he responsible? Hey, if Josh wants to give the kid a million bucks, good for him. All I'm saying is he doesn't owe the kid anything.
