Miguel Cabrera leaves with side 'twinge' on odd All-Star night for Tigers

Tom Gage/ The Detroit News

Detroit— The announcement was an uh-oh moment.

After one at-bat, Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera left Tuesday night's All-Star Game in Phoenix with a "twinge" in his side.

Fox broadcaster Joe Buck said, "The word is he left the game with an injury. That's why he is out."

Later word was Cabrera left the game as a precautionary measure. He told the Associated Press he didn't think it would keep him out when regular season play resumes.

But it was an odd night from the get-go for the Tigers, who went a combined 0-for-5 in the American League's lackluster 5-1 loss to the National League in Phoenix.

While the players were lined up along the baselines for pregame introductions, Cabrera was introduced as Seattle pitcher Felix Hernandez.

Surprised, Cabrera looked around, then broke into a smile.

Alex Avila was not mis-introduced, but his name was skipped entirely when Minnesota's Michael Cuddyer announced the American League starting lineup.

Not catching the mistake, Buck said "good job, Michael."

Then again, Buck — while being complimentary of Cabrera when he came up to the plate — said he was 30 years old, not the 28 that he actually is.

It was that kind of night for the Tigers All-Stars.

Actor Brad Pitt's pregame voiceover got mentioned more often than Justin Verlander, who couldn't pitch because he started Sunday. Actor Justin Timberlake, wasting the viewers' time by discussing the perfection of beer with Mark Grace, got more airtime than almost any individual player.

Avila threw out Lance Berkman at second, but his name wasn't mentioned when he did so. Later on, the National League stole three bases in the fifth inning with Avila behind the plate, but the blame was correctly placed on the pitcher, Jordan Walden of the Angels.

Still, it wasn't so much a tough night for the five Tigers in the All-Star Game, tying the size of their largest contingent since 1985, as it was a strange night.

Neither one of their two pitchers pitched.

Their slugger left the game.

And the starting catcher wasn't mentioned in the starting lineup.
