Carl Everett

Can he play an adequate centerfield or not? I don't get to see enough games to give a valid opinion, but from what I have seen, he plays mighty deep and lets a lot of bloops fall in front of him.

There are two things I know to be true:

1. Rowand is a much better centerfielder; and

2. Everett will be playing centerfield.

3. plus, our two rivals have gazelles in center.

i would say that his defense would be acceptable to me, if he can start hit like he was

suppose to.

what spiff has to says pretty much tops to what is happening.

lol thanks LDF, i don't mean to make you look stupid but i deleted it cause i didn't really answer his question at all.

FYI what i said is i think the sox have no choice but to play carl because if they DH him, either frank or paulie has to sit, and frank never sits (on a regular basis), plus paulie's been hot lately. consequently rowand has been the odd man out, and since they need carl's bat they have to play him the first seven innings or so to try and get a lead.

true, based on what you just posted, i agree and i am guilty of that as well.

but i thought regardless of his defense, the best situation is one that

you and i mention. his "d" or lack off is moot.

My take is he can survive in center in US Cellular but pull him late with a lead before he hurts himself.

Don't even try him in a big CF like Comerica. He doesn't have CF speed and doesn't get a jump.

Better than Milton Bradley, not as good as Aaron Rowand or Willie Harris.

He does seem to play hard, every day and play.

Well, Koch This and I talked about this Tuesday at the game....He is NOT a centerfielder, just happens to be a puzzle piece that KW acquired that doesnt really fix our puzzle. He doesn't cover the ground that a CFer should, and the guy has no freaking clue where to throw the ball when more than 1 runner is on base. He is one guy I could live without, but I don't have that option, so I'l root for him as a Sox player, but he isn't a CFer.

All I have to say is that Rowand is a lot better defensively than Everett, but Everett is gonna play everyday because 1. we traded for him, 2. he gives us experience, and 3. he plays hard so it's a good example for younger players. He's also a LH bat, so that helps. But, I like being able to have Rowand come in at the end of games on defense, and we are still able to have Harris pinch-run if we need a pinch runner.

we are robbing peter to pay paul...Carl can't run and his range is suspect but he can hit for average and power...Rowand is a far superior centerfielder but can't hit for s***...I'd rather have Everett right now.....

Let's see........ Rowand's average is up to .276.

He hit .375 in June

He hit .433 in July

Has hit .400 in August

No he is not playing everyday, but he was definitely catching fire when the trade went down.....

For comparison, Everett has hit....

He hit .211 in June for the Rangers

He hit .241 in July for the Sox

He has hit .348 in the first week of August

good point but Rowand hasn't shown the potential to hit with power or drive in runs...Carl has all through his career...If Everett goes down with an injury then bring in Roland...Borchard is our centerfielder of the future...Rowland will never be a #1 centerfielder for us untill he finds a new source of power....he is a great defensive sub right now...and a good man to use as a pinch runner.....and to spell Everett....I'm glad we have him but i'm tired of centerfielders who are singles hitters...that's a typical power spot...Lofton type centerfielders are not the steriotypical outfielder i grew up watching......

Ah, my great metaphor...ya KW basically is shoving a piece that doesn't fit into the puzzle into the puzzle. "There, now that looks good doesn't it"

capn and i were talking about him as he let a dinky single go for a double early on in the game

I said it the day we acquired him, he sucks as a centerfielder.

that being said, we have to play him there because, well, where the hell else are we going to put him. It wasn't the greatest move KW has made, that's for sure.

Everett hasn't smoked the ball, but he has had a lot of "big" hits in our recent run of success. On an earlier Everett post I pointed to 4 games out of 12 we won where he was critical.

1. 4-3 win over Cleveland. Got the 2-run single in the 3rd to put us back on top after Porzio gave up 3 runs. No other runs scored in game.

2. Game against Detroit, I believe. Drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Konerko was hit in the cup to drive in the winning run.

3. Escobar start in Toronto. Got key double after rain delay that led to 2 Sox runs to tie. We won 4-3 in 13 innings.

4. Singled ahead of Konerko 2-run dinger against KC that put us ahead 5-3. KC tied us at 5, but we won 8-6 in 12.

After that he drove in 5 runs in 12-1 rout of Seattle, which was only victory in that series.

As a lefty in the middle of the lineup, he has helped alot with key hits and by forcing the other team to adjust. His defense and errant throws have hurt, but his jump on balls has improved with more time out there. Overall he's been a plus, especially since the alternative wouldn't be Rowand but some kind of Rowand/Harris platoon. Blech.

IMO, if this team wants to succeed in the postseason, they will need to have Aaron Rowand or Willie Harris in CF. I don't care what kind of hitters they are. In fact, I don't care about their offense at all right now. I'm talking about the fact that you need some very good defense if you want to win. We will get nothing great defensively from this team. We won't have many errors, but many balls that should be caught will not be caught.

I suggested it quite a while ago, and I'll suggest it again....trading one of Lee/Konerko would do wonders for this team, because it would open up a spot at either 1B or in LF....if it was opened up at 1B, we could put Thomas there(where he has had more success at the plate when he's played there), have Lee DH and put Everett in LF(or have Lee play LF and have Everett DH), or if we traded Lee, we'd just move Everett to LF.

I suppose they could win if we had all those guys on the field.....but, IMO, it would be awfully tough.

I gotta disagree with you on this one. We need all the offense that we can get and imo we can live with Carl's mistakes. Earlier in the season, our pitching was awesome but we couldnt hit to save our lives. We got Carl to be our man in centerfield and I would like to see him there in the playoffs.

Rowand and Willie are perfect guys on the bench. Rowand would be a great defensive replacement/pinch runner late in games. And Willie can fly. :headbang

What power hitting CF's did you grow up watching?? Since when has CF been a power spot?

Carl has averaged 16 HR and 67 RBI over the course of his career, hardly someone who "has power and driven in runs his whole career".

Borchard is not likely our CF of the future, Jeremy Reed is.

I know many don't agree with me, but I do believe that given the chance to play everyday Rowand will show power. But that is in the future.

I am not trying to say Rowand should be our starting CF right now and start that argument because Everett is here and we have to live with what we have got. And there is value to having Everett hit from the left side of the plate.
