macsandz
Fewest errors in MLB. Among the best pitching staffs in MLB. 47-50 record.
TheBlackSox8
The Sox would definitely be 20+ games out if it wasn't for the Pitching and Defense. Just think where they'd be if they had a ML offense. It's an A+B+C=W scenario and right now there hasn't even been a C.
BigSqwert
How accurate are statistics for identifying truly good defensive teams? Are we only going by errors because when I watch this team I don't think defensive juggernaut. Sure there are a couple of excellent defensive players in Beckham and Ramirez but the rest of the team is meh IMO.

Seems he was much better last year on the defensive end.

lord chas
hard to judge in my IMO. just because we dont have many errors does it mean we are an elite defensive team? too many misplayed balls in the outfield, botched pick-offs, not holding runners on, and juans noodle arm just a few off the top of my head

In general I think I agree with fathom that Alexei was more impressive last year, but UZR thinks that his 2010 and 2011 defense is practically identical. GoSox05
I think the defense has been pretty good this year. It's not great, but it's but good enough. Maybe not the best range in the outfield. We don't make too many stupid mistakes. Only 45 errors all year is pretty good. Steve9347
Aside from our middle infield, the defense has been nothing special. We don't hold runners on, and the outfield has been bad. The pitching has been quite good, but there's not much range on the roster save the aforementioned middle infield.
Balta1701
QUOTE (lord chas @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 01:20 PM) hard to judge in my IMO. just because we dont have many errors does it mean we are an elite defensive team? too many misplayed balls in the outfield, botched pick-offs, not holding runners on, and juans noodle arm just a few off the top of my head I think we have a really good infield, especially up the middle, and we have a 1b who is good at picking up balls away from him. With that, we save a lot of errors and when the ball is hit on the ground we have a good shot. We also have some liabilities. We can't throw out a runner to save our lives. Our 1b has limited range, and whether we think that's important or not compared to picking the ball, it means he's not the greatest 1b in history. Our RF has been decent and better than expected, but our starting LF and CF have been defensive disasters. Also, we have 2 backups who are solid defensively (Omar, Lilli) and 1 who is not (Teahen), so our backups are at best a wash. We show up well on errors because IF's tend to be the ones who rack up the most errors, but we're solid on the IF and PK14 helps with that. But the defense costs us games in the OF and on the basepaths more than we want to admit.

Maybe average to slightly below average but definitely not a disaster. Edited July 20, 2011 by BigSqwert
maggsmaggs
We are a middle-of-the-road defensive team. What we make up for in not making errors, we lose by virtue of our bad outfield range and horrible caught stealing percentages.
Balta1701
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 01:29 PM) The only thing I'd argue with here is your opinion that our CF has been a defensive disaster. Maybe average to slightly below average but definitely not a disaster. Depends on how we're defining disaster, I guess. I think Rios has been at best fully below average. He's made more than a few bonehead plays that directly affected games and turned into runs, and I struggle to think of many games where he's impressed me out there. Since I'm linking to it for everyone, UZR has him at -5 for the year, where he was +2 for the full season last year. I guess that counts as "Slightly below average"...but I want better than that out of a CF who can't hit my peak weight.
