The Sir
Swing by Penn State. It'd be better if it was college football season, but it'll still be a fun pit stop. And I don't know why or where you're going in Jersey, but hit NYC if you can. It's something everyone's gotta see at some point in their lives (and even if you already have seen it, it's still a good time).

I know the Indiana and Ohio portions of your trip are incredibly boring. Depending on how far out of your way you want to go, Gettysburg is an incredible place to spend a day if you are a history buff. There are plenty of baseball parks also pretty close to your route if you want to try that out.

I live in NY so I've done this trip a couple times. Not much to see in northern Indiana or Ohio, although stopping in South Bend to see Notre Dame is a nice experience. You're probably gonna go through the middle of PA, where there's not much. If you're going to southern Jersey you'll be close to Philly and not far from Gettysburg if you'd like to stop there. It's going to be a fairly boring trip.
Swingandalongonetoleft
My family used to go to Seaside Heights often when I was young. Something I remember from those trips is to watch your speed while driving through Pennsylvania. It's like the Carol Stream of states when it comes to speed traps. They line up the cops on the overpasses, and hide very well along the toll road.
Balta1701
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2011 -> 11:36 AM) Ohio is not much better. They line up the cops on the overpasses, and hide very well along the toll road. I caught a cop doing that in Kentucky while on my trip a couple weeks ago. Of course, then there was the part where I was listening to a Braves game in GA, a cop wrote in wishing the Braves well and saying he was watching on I-75, the announcers asked "Where", and a couple innings later the cop tweeted back with 2 exit numbers that they were covering. I laughed.

Its still nothing like getting a ticket in downstate illinois because they tracked me from a f***ing airplane.
bulokis
Thanks for the suggestions. We will definitely stop by Notre Dame but most likely on the way back. We are going to Cherry hill which is really close to Philly. Definitely will hit New York. Gettysburg is a great idea. thanks.

If you do have limited time in Gettysburg, take one of the bus tours. They give you a pretty good overview of the battle and the spots, and do it in a couple of hours. lostfan
Chicago to the east coast is a pretty boring trip... ugh. Nothing on those toll roads thru Indiana and Ohio, you don't go through any actual cities, nothing to see.

Guess it depends where on the east coast you're going to.

Milkman delivers
I've done the Chicago-Boston trip and vice versa a few times. There is nothing for 1,000 miles, although I always thought it was cool that both Comiskey and Fenway are right on I-90. You can drive straight from one to the other. Looking at google maps of each park, Safeco looks to be exactly the same distance to 90 as the other parks (using the 1" = 200 meters scale for each map).
