Rich Harden not to the Red Sox

Figured this was worth a thread.

With the trade deadline looming at 4 p.m. Sunday, the Sox are closing in on acquiring Rich Harden from the Oakland Athletics in a deal that would involve first baseman Lars Anderson, a major-league source has told the Herald. The deal has not yet been completed, but it may be finalized later tonight. Anderson was removed from tonight’s game at Triple-A Pawtucket.

Harden, 29, is 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA in five starts for the Athletics since coming off the disabled list. In his last three starts, he has been sharp, allowing seven runs on 12 hits and striking out 22 in 18-1/3 innings against the Angels, Yankees and Rays.

Teams that haven't yet made a move to upgrade but are legitimately in the playoff hunt

Atlanta Braves

NY Yankees

Pittsburgh Pirates

Things those teams could use:

Braves: Outfield bat

Yankees: Starting Pitching

Pirates: bat at some position, maybe Catcher, who isn't incredibly expensive.

Things the White Sox have to sell:

Outfield bats

Starting Pitching

Catching

Relief Pitching

We have catching to sell? Sell some minor league backstops. Aj Flowers we could use an Aj replacement someone with an arm.

Moving AJ's deal for next year, even if we had to chip in some money, would be a solid move.

Unless we're planning on bringing back Buerhle/Floyd/Danks for one last shot at it.

Then we need to stick it out with AJ for at least 3-4 months into 2012.

If we could clear $5 million of the $7 million or so remaining on AJ's deal, that's money that could be used to grab a decent offseason catcher.

Catchers

Rod Barajas LAD

Henry Blanco ARI

Ramon Castro CWS

Ryan Doumit PIT

Ramon Hernandez CIN

Jason Kendall KC

Gerald Laird STL

Jose Molina TOR

Yadier Molina STL *

Dioner Navarro LAD

Jorge Posada NYY

Ivan Rodriguez WAS

Brian Schneider PHI

Kelly Shoppach TB *

Chris Snyder PIT *

Matt Treanor KC

Jason Varitek BOS

* = 2012 option.

Good Lord, that was a horrible list of catchers.

There's maybe only 3-5 on that list I would peremptorily give consideration to.

#MLB Harden says he's staying put. Deal w #RedSox falls through

How do you write a deal for Harden and then back out of it because of injury concerns?
