Dayan Viciedo shows off more of his tools

By Doug Padilla

CHICAGO -- Dayan Viciedo got a chance to show off the other side of his promising ability Sunday.

Everybody seems to know about Viciedo’s hitting prowess. But on Sunday, he got a chance to show off his throwing arm.

Viciedo snuffed out an Indians rally in the sixth inning when he scooped up a Jason Donald single and threw out Trevor Crowe at the plate.

The throw was actually there so early that even though it was high, catcher A.J. Pierzynski had time to leave his feet to catch the ball, come down and get into position for the tag.

Donald tried to get his forearms up on Pierzynski, but was tagged out anyway.

“A lot of people are going to be running on him because they don’t know him,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. “That happens when the people don’t know him. They are going to send people to the plate. He has a good arm. The throw was pretty good. A.J. made a pretty good tag. It was a good play.”

Viciedo was converted to right field this spring, but he did play the position in his native Cuba before signing with the White Sox. With Juan Pierre not expected back next season and with the possibility that Carlos Quentin could be traded, Viciedo is expected to start in the outfield for the White Sox in 2012.

“Since spring training he has played very good (in right field),” Guillen said. “(Roving outfield instructor) Daryl Boston has been working with him in the minor leagues to make him better. I think he feels very comfortable in the outfield and seems more relaxed and put the work together and feel relaxed out there. He’s going to get better.”

Some see it differently. There was a thread I was watching for quite some time called Viciedo Ready.

Sometimes I wonder if the Dunn signing was premature or there's still some doubt about Viciedo.

One way or another, we needed at least one big LH bat that was provided in the past by Thome and not so much by the likes of Borchard or Swisher...Viciedo has a lot more to do with Quentin's eventual destination this offeason (trade or stay) than anything with Dunn.

He gives a lot more value playing a competent RF than DH/1B. Of course, the best scenario would have been him sticking at 3B defensively.

And if so that is because KW painted the team into a corner with spending big bucks on Dunn when we had an option. Peavy just might be another example. I don't begrudge him for being aggressive but it seems when he has his eye set on someone he won't stop trying to get that player even if it takes a long time. Being aggressive is one thing but it does sometimes come back to bite you.

This isn't the worst thing in the world though. Quentin is signed for 1 more year now, Viciedo still clearly coudl benefit from starting 2011 in the minors, and it was entirely possible that Quentin would come out and be injured or really bad in RF again this season. Clearly Quentin was healthy enough that we'll offer him arbitration...but that wasn't clear coming into the season...and Quentin is movable somewhat now.

With the break in spring training, there wasn't a chance that Dayan was starting this season 2011 in the majors.

The Dunn signing was well before Spring Training though, and when Dunn was signed, it made it really hard for Dayan to have a big league spot. That was what the original poster was criticizing.

I don't mind having him planned to start in AAA this year anyway, he still had to work on patience and work on a new fielding position.

singles and two doubles and one homer isn't real impressive numbers so far. But, expereince could pay off in 2012. I just don't think CQ being traded is going to help. I think an OF of CQ-De Aza and Viciedo is a good one, but Rios may be in that mix too with De Aza the 4th OF'er
