Rex Hudler
Birmingham looks to be headed to the playoffs for the 4th straight year. They currently have a 1.5 game lead over Huntsville in the 2nd Half standingswith a 26-20 record. Since Huntsville won the 1st Half, if Hunstville would pass the Barons in this half also, then the 2nd playof spot would go to the team with the next best overall record, which is currently Birmingham with a 4 game lead over West Tenn, the Cubs AA affiliate. The Barons have 23 games left including 4 each against Huntsville and West Tenn. They have The Barons are 59-55 overall. After watching this team all year, I can honestly say that I am not sure how they are winning. Part of it is that there are no great teams in the league this year. Last year they won with speed ala Wally Ball. This year the speed is only so-so and there is absolutely no power (55 HR for the team all year). Backman has guys that have settled into specific roles and the team behind great starting pitching, finds ways to win. The bullpen is still shaky since the departure of Ring. Jeff Bajenaru who was arguably the team's best reliever in June and July, has been inconsistent since Ring left and his role has changed. Gabe Alvarez (.311 10HR 64RBI .485SLG .401OBP) has to be the offensive MVP because he has been there all year. Jeremy Reed (.390 7HR 23RBI .585SLG .455OBP) has dominated in 44 games and really helped solidify this club. Neal Cotts (9-6 2.12) has dominated SL hitters and has to be the Most Valuable Pitcher, although Enemencio Pacheco (10-2 2.66) is right on his heels. They could be voted the top LH and RH in the Southern League this year. Both are among the league leaders in several categories. Tetsu Yofu (8-6 3.48) has been solid as well and Byeoung An (3-1 3.18 ) has pitched well, giving the Barons 4 solid starters. Bajenaru, Jim Bullard and Ryan Meaux have been solid out of the pen. Since the departure of Ring, the pen lacks the dominant closer that allows everyone else to settle into a specific role (sound familiar?). Rex Hudler
Winston-Salem won their division in the first half of the season and will be headed to the playoffs for the first time in several years. They are currently 23-22 in the 2nd half and are 3.5 games back. They are 62-51 overall. They have 24 games remaining. The fact that they are in the playoffs for the first time in awhile (they have been terrible in recent years) is likely the main reason there have not been more promotions to AA Birmingham. The strength of this team is pitching and the offensive production is spread pretty evenly throught the lineup. Reed deserves the offensive MVP because even though he is gone, he was the man when they were winning in the first half. I'll give Brian Becker and Ruddy Yan honorable mentions here. Their rotation has been solid all year with Kris Honel (8-6 3.05), Ryan Wing (9-5 2.78), Frankie Francisco (7-3 3.56 - now with the Rangers) and Wyatt Allen (6-5 3.73). Ryan Meaux (1-3 1.15 10Sv) was dominant in the first half and Rick Hummel (1-0 0.00 in 12 games) and Julio Castro (2-1 1.16 2 Sv) have picked up where he left off. Josh Fields (4-6 3.28 16Sv) has been solid as well. I would say it is a tossup between Honel and Wing as the Most Valuable Pitcher. Wing has struggled as of late, otherwise I think he would be the more clear choice. Jim Fainter
Thanks, Rex. There is one question that I have about our minor leaguers that I have been reluctant to ask, because it is pretty early to be thinking about. But since you just did this report, I'll ask now. Which of our minor league players must be added to the Sox 40 man roster this winter to avoid exposing them to minor league drafts? Tks gain. Jim Fainter
The only thing stopping it is the 40 man roster. I think they owe it to him, plus a minor league invite to ST at the least.
danman31
I'm really glad to see Tim Hummel hitting well and I hope that Aaron Miles keeps it up as well. I think we've done a pretty good job of restocking the minors the last few years. We have a lot of hitters higher up and the pitchers are lower. I think we did a great job in this year's draft as well (Nanita, Anderson, Sweeney).
winninguglyin83
excellent reports to me the players with the chance to help a little in September are Hummel, Rauch, Cotts and Pacheco. I would have added Rivera, but the decision to summon Burke over Rivera says there are doubts about Rivera as a receiver.
Rex Hudler
Kannapolis has not had a great season, from its record of 48-66 to some disappointing performances. They are 16-30 in the second half and 17.5 games out of first place. After losing Rupe and Webster to the Rangers, a promotion of Rick Hummel and a disappointing season by Andy Gonzalez, there is not much there. They are hitting .242 as a team and have no one over .300. Webster (.289 2HR 33RBI 20SB) or Thomas Brice (.278 0HR 41RBI) seem as logical candidates as any for offensive MVP. Rupe (5-5 3.02), BJ LaMura (6-9 3.55) or Hummel (2-3 1.47 10Sv) are the best choices for Most Valuable Pitcher. I doubt he will get called up...... not to say that he doesn't deserve it. Also, remember, some teams call up fewer players when they are in a pennant race for fear of added distractions, and paying guys while they sit on the bench. That's a good point. I never thought of the idea of calling players up that way.
Rex Hudler
Great Falls got off to a great start in the Pioneer League season and then fell off somewhat. They are currently 27-23 overall and 7-5 in the 2nd Half, which is good for a tie for 1st place. They have 26 games remaining. This team has been an offensive juggernaut, averaging 6.42 runs per game. Unfortunately their pitching (4.78 team ERA) and defense (just under 2 errors a game) hasn't been good. There have been lots of great individual performances, most on the offensive side. The team batting average is .294 so there is no way to mention everyone. Ricardo Nanita is hands down the offensive MVP. The Sox 14th round draft pick this year has hit .379 with 5HR and 37RBI to go with a .548SLG and .441OBP. Brandon Bounds, Antoin Gray, and several others have had excellent seasons. Brian Anderson, this year's 1st round pick hit very well in 13 games before injuring his wrist. Brandon McCarthy (7-3 2.44) is the clear-cut Most Valuable Pitcher. He has also walked just 11 and struck out 76 in 70 IP. Rex Hudler
Bristol has had a decent season, currently sporting a 26-25 mark. They are 3 games back with two teams ahead of them in the standings. The story on offense has come from two players at the top of the order, Chris Young and Robert Valido. Young (.300 6HR 26RBI 19SB .494SLG .374OBP) probably deserves to be the MVP. Robert Valido (.295 5HR 23RBI 16SB .482SLG .365OBP), was the Sox 5th round selection in this year's draft out of a Miami HS and has impressed at SS. This year's 2nd rounder, Ryan Sweeney has battled injuries but was just starting to heat up when the injury bug came. Orinny Lopez (5-0 1.66 9BB 42K in 38IP) and Fabio Castro (4-2 2.20 16BB 42K in 32.2IP) have impressed out of the bullpen. Fernando De'Aza, Tim Tisch and Jay Marshall have pitched well out of the rotation. In my mind, Lopez is the likely Most Valuable Pitcher. And what was the injury bug Sweeney is battling? Not sure about Nanita.... Sweeney was hit by a pitch around the knee and was out 4 or 5 days. Then a day or two after he came back he tweaked a hamstring. They are just being overly cautious with him.
Cerbaho-WG
Nanita may be heading off to Kanny, but I'm not 100% positive. Also, with the Lopez/Castro debate, I've gotta side with Castro. He's a lefty who can reach the mid to high 90's, or so I've heard.
