Maybe I just have an unduly low impression of Cubs fans, but I feel like gimmicks work better on impacting ticket sales on the North Side.

Reinsdorf seems to do OK cashing in on using former players. If Fisk was named manager tomorrow I bet that boost sales.

You don't hire Francona unless you have a team that can win in the next year or two, which the Cubs clearly do not.

I agree with this, which is why I'm not sure why so many White Sox fans are clamoring for him to be signed. I don't see the right fit unless Jerry is going "All In" again.

Even with the fall in attendance up there, it really doesn't leave much upside to sell more tickets.

I see the Sox as being much closer than the Cubs, because all we need is guys to play like they have done in the recent past to have a big resurgence. I don't know if I am a big Francona fan or not.

With the impending payroll paring and potential rebuild, I'm not even close to optimistic. I'm not counting on Rios or Dunn returning to form either.

No manager really wants a piece of the Cubs seat. Low pay, terrible upper management and basically zero control over anything. You then take a look at your roster and realize last place isnt really that fun (well except for Hou). The Pirates finished ahead of the CUbs this year and next year they are going to be even worse.

The same thing could be said about this organization.

If that is the case then you want the Sox to go as cheap as possible as the odds are good this manager will be gone by the time they win again anyway.

Indeed. I just don't see a good fit right now. Maybe it's just me, but I think almost everything will have to go right for the Sox to be in contention next season.

If it was 3 years ago, they would have people tripping over themselves to fill that park up. But that team is gone, and the current roster is in no way shape or form going to be enticing for Tito, nor the fans. It would be a quick love affair for Francona, then a harsh reality midway through the season

The f***ing morons are all excited to see Ferris Buehler they still buy into any s*** up there

cubs upper management is Rickettes, Crane Kenny and an unknown GM...

The White Sox is Reinsdorf one of the most loyal guys in sports and a GM that is not afraid to make moves

the two really could not be further apart at this time

JR will take alot of heat from Selig since he is on the MLB minority hiring commitee, If he hires Francona over Alomar or Martinez. JR to his credit has been a leader in minority hirings with KW as GM and Manuel and OG as manager's and I do not see that changing IMO. I just want the best guy to lead the Sox on and off the field. :gosoxretro:

What? All three are Hispanic.

Also the interesting thing is Theo's name being tossed around by the cubs. If Theo cut Francona lose he is obligated to stay and see the next regime through, is he not.

It would be interesting if Theo is cut loose, does Francona follow him if in fact it was not Theo's call.

Francona is not hispanic, His ancestors are of Italian descent. He is a South Dakotan by birth.

So, there was a meeting of the minds in Boston this morning, and Francona is at least not yet officially out, and no one is commenting on squat.

Terry Francona met with Boston Red Sox management on Friday to discuss his future as manager, but the team said a decision has not been reached.

Shortly after the meeting, Francona, owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner left in separate cars. Francona left first, at 11:55 a.m. ET.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein released a statement Friday afternoon.

"John Henry, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino, Ben Cherington and I met with Terry Francona this morning at Fenway Park to exchange thoughts and information on the 2011 season and discuss areas for improvement going forward," he said. "We all plan on taking some time to process the thoughts expressed in the meeting. There are no immediate plans for an announcement."

Despite the statement, Francona told staff members on Thursday that he will not be returning as manager, a club source told ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes on Friday.

Several other media outlets reported Friday that Francona would not return for a ninth season. He led the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 -- their first since 1918 -- and 2007.

The situation remained fluid Friday afternoon, with Edes reporting that Francona returned to Fenway Park shortly after Epstein's statement.

I can't believe that after the Sox's record over the past decade that JR would take any heat over that at all.

I'm not convinced Francona is the right man for the job. Great managers are those who can get more out of less. In Boston, Francona has always been surrounded with top talent and payrolls. His experience and titles certainly trump that of guys like Alomar Jr. and Martinez who have never managed in the big leagues before, but they don't necessarilly mean he is a great manager.

Winning two World Series in eight years, from the AL East makes you a great manager.

"We met this morning to look back on the 2011 season and to consider the future of the Boston Red Sox, including my involvement with the club," Francona said in a statement released by the club. "I passed along my frustrations at my inability to effectively reach the players. After many conversations and much consideration, I ultimately felt that, out of respect to this team, it was time for me to move on."

He admits he can't reach the players. The Sox have a couple of very pricey veterans who need to be "reached". You can cross Francona off the list.

If the Sox are interested in changing the organizational culture, Francona doesn't sound like the right fit.

I agree.

He's had some huge success and he is a classy guy, but his team just had one of the biggest collapses in history. If they go 9-18 in September they make the playoffs. What's he going to do with a team with the talent level of the White Sox?

I won't cry if JR hires him. I just think he'd probably be great someplace else.
