It is amazing, because really it isn't rocket science.

Of course, then we still have to figure out what the bleep that was in May when they tried to turn him into a closer for a week for some ungodly reason...but whatever.

I believe we've heard Hawk have a similar discussion this year. I think they specifically referred to that regarding Humber...that he was trying to throw an ineffective cutter and Cooper got him to drop it and focus on the slider.

Gavin Floyd is an interesting case, because he may well be one of those guys who gets away from the curveball or even loses control of the curveball at times when he's really using the cutter.

I think that's a pretty good philosophy that the O's are advocating.

It needs to be a case-by-case basis, obviously, but I think our organization is probably finding out that the cutter is not a good pitch for everyone. With Gavin, I think he would be better off without it. It appears to have had a very bad effect on Phil Humber, because he struggles to throw his curveball for strikes anymore.

Now that I think about it...it's probably a great pitch to teach guys like Mark or Danksy...that don't have good curveballs to begin with...but guys with a good yacker, you'd just as much not mess with that.

Danks and Buehrle both used to feature curve balls. Good ones

Nowhere near what a guy like Floyd throws.

Danks and Mark featured curveballs. But that was never their bread and butter. It might be John's 4th best pitch, after his changeup, fastball, and cut fastball. Mark used his a bit more prominently maybe, but it certainly was not the pitch that often defined his performance like it is with a guy like Floyd or Humber.

It isnt of Gavins level of course, but both pitchers started off with it as their second or third best pitch, only to have the cutter and change replace it

the cutter certainly seems to ruin the curve

Hanley homered off Burnett and threw up the eye glasses while running the bases.

Next time up, Burnett K'd Hanley and yelled "Sit The F down" at him. Pretty funny

I'd say Hanley got off easy.

Surprised no one posted this yesterday. This is actually kinda interesting...MLB trying out high tech options for replay down the line.

Major League Baseball owners have agreed to test two different advanced replay systems live during games starting next week, and if they prove accurate they could precede an overhaul of the system for the 2013 season, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

MLB will analyze a radar-based system and a camera-based system, both similar to the one used in tennis for down-the-line fair-or-foul calls. Yankee Stadium and Citi Field will be the guinea-pig parks for the systems, which have been installed recently.

The use of the systems will be strictly in the background and for analysis. Because the number of questionable plays during games is likely to be limited, MLB plans to do extra testing on non-game days. Before implementing the technology in its 30 ballparks, the league wants to ensure its accuracy is up to standard.

It was pretty amazing to see the national writers pretty united in saying exactly that.

Makes you wonder if there is more to the story. What's the point of suddenly firing him in the middle of a weekend series, it's not like the team is underachieving, they have no talent.

Unless they felt the team had quit, but with as young as they all are now, I really can't believe that.

Roger Clemens is apparently back in baseball and will be the starting pitcher for the independent Sugar Land Skeeters on Saturday.

Sugar Land Skeeters? Is that a baseball team or a porn ensemble?

Even with injuries and all, I am surprised that Drew made it through waivers.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/break...story?track=rss

The Athletics acquired veteran shortstop Stephen Drew from the Diamondbacks in a trade that sent 23-year-old minor-league infielder Sean Jamieson to Arizona, the A;s announced Monday.

Drew, 29, missed 137 games with Arizona from July 21, 2011, through June 26 of this season because of a broken ankle. He has played in 40 games this season and is hitting .193 with two homers. He is hitless in his last 15 at-bats and is batting .069 (2-for-29) in his last nine games.

He will report to Oakland on Tuesday.
