With Edwin Jackson having signed with the Nationals, there are but two big-time free agents remaining on the market: Roy Oswalt and Yoenis Cespedes. However, if this were several years ago, then Manny Ramirez would count. Also if this were several years ago, then other things. Hard to specify without identifying a particular number of years.

Yes, Manny's still floating around, and according to ESPN Deportes, he's close to making a decision - kind of. Translated quote:

Manny Ramirez is waiting for God to enlighten him to decide between Baltimore, Oakland and Toronto to begin negotiating a contract that allowed to return to the majors in 2012, two sources said Friday at ESPNdeportesLosAngeles.com.

The Orioles, A's and Blue Jays have all shown interest in Ramirez this winter. However, none of them has made a formal offer. If I'm understanding this correctly, then Ramirez will decide on a team with which he'd like to pursue a contract. Presumably that team would then be willing to give him a contract.

Probably a minor league contract. I can't actually imagine that a team would give him a major league contract at this point. For a bunch of reasons, not the least of which being that Ramirez will miss the season's first 50 games. That's kind of a thing.

Ramirez has been working out, and a source in this report says that the A's could give him the best opportunity. Pretty exciting for Manny. Kind of sad for the A's.

Another of the signs of spring...

Mark Prior expected to attempt “one more comeback”

From Nick Cafardo’s Sunday notes column in the Boston Globe:

Mark Prior, RHP, free agent – He will likely attempt one more comeback. He spent some of last season with the Yankees, his rebuilt arm holding up well and getting his velocity into the low 90s. But Prior, who was the Stephen Strasburg of his day, has a new problem. After many weeks of trying to figure out what was wrong with the lower half of his body, he had surgery for a sports hernia, but the problem wasn’t completely corrected. He is working out near his home in San Diego, trying to figure it out. He will likely work out for teams as early as March.

Prior, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2001 MLB Amateur Draft, registered a promising 2.25 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 15/4 K/BB ratio across 12 minor league innings last year. He hasn’t appeared in a major league game since the 2006 season, but he could score a spring training invitation if he’s healthy and throwing well before spring training concludes.

What could possible compel him to just not retire. Most players don't attempt one comeback, let alone two...

And what team would want to sign him after all his injury history when you could arguable get a pitcher half his age to produce the same results Prior would probably give a team?

#Orioles & #Rockies nearing agreement 2 swap RHP Jeremy Guthrie for 2 players, likely RHPs Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom, accdg to sces

Interesting deal for the Rockies. Since he has been on the Orioles, I feel like Guthrie has been a bit underrated. Pitching for the worst team in the AL East, 3 of the last 5 seasons he has had an ERA of under 4, and was at 4.33 last year.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty told John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer on Sunday that he hadn’t spoken with the agent Roy Oswalt in about a week while adding that “the last we heard he was going to Texas.” Either Jocketty was being coy or something has changed in the past day or so, because Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com are now reporting that the Reds “remain in talks” with the veteran right-hander.

Rosenthal actually reported on Saturday that the Reds, Red Sox and Phillies had maintained contact with Oswalt’s representatives, but was later told that Cincinnati had merely kicked the tires and weren’t actively involved in negotiations. It turns out he may have been right the first time.

Oswalt would still prefer to pitch for the Rangers or Cardinals, but since both clubs have full starting rotations, he’s having a hard time landing the one-year, $8-10 million salary he reportedly covets. The Reds also have a full slate of starters, but it looks like they are hoping to take advantage of a depressed market in order to make a deal work. They would have to move salary in order to sign him and Homer Bailey is considered the most likely trade candidate.
