The White Sox are expected to try to bring starting pitcher Mark Buehrle back on a two-year deal, and he may be one of the many veterans loyal to owner Jerry Reinsdorf who stays for less. If he leaves, most would expect it to be for his hometown St. Louis Cardinals.

SI's Jon Heyman reports the White Sox "are expected" to re-sign Mark Buehrle to a two-year contract, potentially on a discount thanks to his loyalty to Jerry Reinsdorf. But if the Sox do re-sign Buehrle, it would have cause quite a bit of shuffling in the team's starting rotation.

Jake Peavy will almost certainly be with the White Sox next year, as he's owed $17 million in 2012 and has a $4 million buyout of his 2013 option that's unlikely to be picked up -- so his total price tag for next year will be $21 million. Given his 4.49 ERA and the fact he hasn't made more than 20 starts in a season since 2008, it's logical to assume he'll stay with the Sox.

Philip Humber is another good bet to stay on the South Side, as his fine 2011 campaign and low price tag make him an attractive option for a team expected to scale back its payroll a bit.

So that leaves three spots open in the rotation for John Danks, Gavin Floyd, Chris Sale, Zach Stewart and possibly Buehrle.

If Buehrle is brought back, one of these scenarios would likely play out:

1. The Sox deal away both Danks and Floyd and move Sale into the rotation, giving them a starting five of Buehrle, Peavy, Humber, Sale and Stewart.

2. The Sox deal either Floyd or Danks and move Sale into the rotation with Stewart going to Triple-A or the bullpen. (Buehrle, Danks/Floyd, Peavy, Humber, Sale)

3. The Sox hang on to Floyd and Danks and keep Sale in the bullpen. (Buehrle, Danks, Floyd, Peavy, Humber)

4. The Sox hang on to Floyd and Danks and send Sale to Triple-A to start. (Buehrle, Danks, Floyd, Peavy, Humber)

Sale is the most likely linchpin in all of this, and with Ozzie Guillen -- who wanted to keep Sale as a reliever long-term -- out, a clear path appears to exist within the organization to move Sale to the rotation.

If Sale does become a major-league starter next season, it'll mean the Sox will have to move somebody -- most likely Danks or Floyd -- to retain Buehrle. Moving Sale to the minors to work on a few things could be an option, but that's mere speculation at this point.

If this is true, then I don't expect a full blown rebuild.

Man honestly, who knows that the hell the Sox are going to do. KW might not be done surprising us just yet.

The most obvious plan I can see is "Trade Quentin and Danks, keep M-56 and go into the season with that." Signing M-56 fits with the "Keep M-56" part of that plan.

But yeah...this is where Trader Kenny earns his nickname.

I vote for this option. With Sale needing to build up his arm and Peavy's arm constantly falling off, you will need that 6th starter. Let Stewart every 5 days in Charlotte so he can be ready to pitch for the Sox when needed.

I'm entirely in agreement with this statement.

It also probably leaves you Axelrod and maybe even Santiago based on how the pen does over the winter.

Yep, this is my first choice as well.

Santiago...I'd look at grooming him for the pen (probably by starting him in Charlotte if there's a spot open)...but I'd only look at him if Thornton is moved, and I'd only move Matty for a solid offer.

Axelrod...I'm thinking I'd put him as the last guy out of the pen right now.

Thornton is probably the #2 person to be moved this winter. I'm assuming he is gone.

It still surprises me that M56 is predicted to be a Type B FA. A mid-rotation or better starter on most teams is a Type B?

It's the classic "The advanced metrics hate M-56 because he doesn't strike enough people out" game.
