All signs point to Cotts

For those of you who haven't read the 6 page Cotts topic. Some points have been made....

1. Dan Wright was used out of the bullpen

2. Manuel has said he doesn't want a 4 Man Rotation because of the bullpen woes and that Tuesday Dan Wright will not necessarily start.

3. Mitch Wylie was pushed into Cotts' spot in the rotation for Tuesday, the same day the un-named 5th starter will start in Anaheim.

I really think we have Cotts coming. I sure hope we do.

I bet Jim Bullard know. Come on Jim, you can tell us. We can keep a secret.

Seriously, don't you think that if he is going to pitch in Anaheim Tuesday, that he would fly out there with the team tonight? Why would you make him fly commercial/coach across the country on Monday, suffer through the jet lag, etc. when it's not necessary?

KW can't wait to try and make the Botch for the '03 AL Saves Leader Foulke fiasco palatable to Sox fans. In the midst of a pennant race, and were hinging our 5th starter hopes on a AA pitcher. Keep spending that green JR ..... now that the fans are coming out  .

Wasn't too long ago that we put alot of hopes into a pitcher straight up from AA.....I think his name was Mark Buehrle?

If it were up to me, I would bring up Adkins. He has been pitching very well, and he is already on the 40 man roster.

Ideally, Cotts would be kept off the 40 man roster and invited to ST in 2004 on Charlotte's roster. That way they could use that spot for some other prospect who would be lost through the the draft otherwise. Unless Cotts would have to be promoted to the 40 man to be protected, then it doesn't make any difference. I wish we had some way of knowing who will have to be protected, so that this board could properly advise KW.

Yeah. This fact has been pointed out to me more times than I can stomach.

I guess it's just the pissed off fan in me that wants to see JR spend a little money and KW deal for someone with ML and playoff experience considering we still have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. Afterall, the "kids" did so well for us in 2000  . And, if we make the playoffs this year, EL, BC, and/or MB can have a bad start at anytime. Would be nice to have someone in the BP for long relief that has the ability to shut down an opposing offense besides JG..... who is still too damn inconsistent for us to depend on him to flat out shut the opposition down during the possible postseason. If we go with the 3-man rotation if we make the playoffs, who else do we have for long relief besides JG? Gordon? No. Marte? No. Koch? HELL f***ING NO! Wunsch? No. Ginter? No. Wright? Who knows what the f*** he's doing/will be doing if we make the playoffs. Schoenweis? Maybe. Do we even have a long reliever at this point with JG our number 4 in the rotation?

I hope you're all right and Cotts is the answer because, if we make the playoffs, we're gonna need someone other than JG for long relief AT THE VERY LEAST. JMHO. I'd prefer someone that's been in that position before but that's just me.

Um...how many more starts is our #5 going to have? A handful? I'd hardly call that "resting our hopes on a AA pitcher". And I say let's give the kid a shot. Why can't he do the same thing MB did? MB wasn't even considered one of our top prospects (at least I don't think he was), and he's handled himself just fine at the ML level. If Cotts gets rocked, he goes back down -- not that big of a deal. Luckily we're in a division where 90 wins will likely not be necessary to win make the post season, so we have some room for error. But, if we keep playing the way we've been playing, we'll be just fine, regardless of who our #5 starter is.

Someone here figured out about 8.

Has anyone checked to see if that's correct? I'll try and do it...

OK, I think I did it right (the way I figured it out is I counted 1, 2, 3..etc, and when there was an off-day in the middle of that, I assumed the Sox would skip the #5 that time). Anyway, if my calculations are correct, our #5 will have 7 more starts. The games are...

August 12 @ Anaheim

August 17 @ Texas

August 22 vs. Texas

September 7 vs. Cleveland

September 12 @ Boston

September 22 vs. New York

September 27 @ KC (although, I don't see us going with our #5 for that game unless Cotts or whoever is lights out if this game is for the division)

So I'd say there are 3 tough starts in there (the last 3), and 4 games that we should win (the first 4).

It's between 5 and 8 depending on how you figure it and how the Sox decide to use the other four starters.

This came from the article about Frank playing 1B on the roadtrip....

Rotating arms: Pitching coach Don Cooper said before Sunday’s game that he’s approaching Tuesday night’s game in Anaheim as if Danny Wright was starting. But Cooper also mentioned that Wright is available out of the bullpen during the next two games.

“If he pitches in relief during those games, obviously that could change things,” Cooper said of Wright.

I think Danny Wright has gotten an ample chance to grab the #5 spot, time to give someone else a shot.

Agree 100%. 12 starts is plenty of time to show what you've got, and by the looks of it, DW has nothing this year. Hopefully if he stays in the pen, he'll remember how to pitch (or at least pitch well enough to not kill us).

I was all but sure today that they were going to give Danny another shot until I heard they moved Wylie into Tuesday, which is Cotts day in the rotation. It may mean nothing. They may just want to give him an extra day of rest since it is deep in the season. But the way he has been pitching, you would think they would keep him on the same routine, so who knows??
