oldsox
I first heard a few weeks ago that the Rangers re-play that fight routinely before all home games, even though the event happened many years ago. They're a bunch of low class idiots to do that. I can't believe Commissioner Bud Lite allowed that to happen. Does he want more fights? I hope one of our pitchers does some serious head hunting down there.

OMG I hope the Sox bean Miguel Cabrera for that Jeff Weaver/Detroit Tigers fight in 2000. IM STILL MAD ABOUT THAT Did you even read this thread? The whole point is that the Rangers are going to stop showing that
chetkincaid
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 3, 2011 -> 11:16 AM) Yeah, baseball players seem like such p*****s when fighting. I'm sure there are a few cases of guys landing some really good punches. The problem is that you said Ryan had his ass kicked by Winfield when he clearly did not. If you're looking at the same youtube video that I'm looking at, then it's hard to tell. But if you read the statements of the people that saw the brawl, they all pretty much say that Ryan was on the losing end of that brawl. Hell Ryan himself said that he didn't want another Winfield incident.

But if you read the statements of the people that saw the brawl, they all pretty much say that Ryan was on the losing end of that brawl. Hell Ryan himself said that he didn't want another Winfield incident. Perhaps this falls into the "one good punch" thing that is the best a baseball player can hope for. Judging by the video, though, that one punch didn't take Ryan down, so I can't imagine it being that bad.
shago
I think the Sox should tell them not to edit their pre-game reel and enjoy the humor of it ... bfd
max power
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 3, 2011 -> 10:55 AM) That doesn't change the fact that Robin lost that "fight" pretty decisively. If your criteria for deciding a fight is one guy bleeding from an area of the body only likely to bleed if smashed with a hammer, then there's never going to be a winner. What I was attempting to convey was that I don't care who won, it was under three seconds and no damage was done. Yet some people go on and on about 'Ryan kicking Ventura's ass' like they are little kids at a playground. Middle Buffalo
This "fight" is so overrated. In the angle they always show (from the catcher), Ventura looks like he gets pounded. But if you see it from the centerfield angle, Ryan's noogies barely land before Ventura gets out of the headlock and they go to the ground. 5:20 on the video. If you look at Ryan as he's falling, he looks like an old man. And then when you see Ventura after the brawl, he doesn't exactly look like a guy who just got beat up. Mickey Hatcher's the only guy who really took a beating, though, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6w_7C1CDgdg Pretty good article about the fight. http://miscbaseball.wordpress.com/2009/08/...ing-nolan-ryan/ Great comment by Jack McDowell about Ryan. “The whole world stops when that guy pitches, like he’s God or something. He’s been throwing at batters forever, and people are gutless to do anything about it. I was glad Robin went out. Someone had to do it. He’s pulled that stuff wherever he goes. Too bad he doesn’t show up for his team until the next time it’s his turn to pitch. He’ll be home on the ranch. You watch, his team will fall just short again while he shows up on the DL.” I have to add that I like the '93 Sox as much as the '05 Sox. I'll always be hugely disappointed that they didn't win it all. The way that team grew up together from the late 80's into the early 90's was so great to watch as a fan. southsider2k5
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 3, 2011 -> 11:09 AM) Let's not kid ourselves. Steroids were around during the vast majority of Winfield's career. Still, he was 6'6" and broad in an era where baseball players looked like that. He was Mark McGwire when guys that size played football.

They have pretty well taken that out of the game.

It'd be even cooler if the 2012 White Sox made the postseason and kicked the living s*** out of the Texas Rangers in the playoffs and sent Ryan and his team packing again without a WS ring. Now THAT would be cool. Edited November 3, 2011 by Chet Kincaid

southsider2k5
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 3, 2011 -> 04:01 PM) I'm going off of Black Jack's description. I'm guessing McDowell hated Ryan because they were the same exact mentalities. Both were bulldogs who wanted the ball, and owned both sides of the plate. They weren't afraid to blow you off of the plate if needed, and they would throw at someone to protect teammates.
