I'd say from the sounds of Kenny, if Mark leaves, it is a given that Danks or Floyd goes.

I'd rather see Mark back (at a reasonable price) and Danks or Floyd traded. Danks is going to get very expensive, and to me it makes sense to trade him now. Floyd is not too expensive, and maybe some team would like to have him. My concern with trades is the Sox getting back some good talent. KW keeps saying he wants major league ready talent, and I'm afraid he'll hold on to Danks and end up losing him for nothing after 2012 or giving in and making a bad trade.

Some folks saying buehrle won't fit in #chisox budget and will be gone unless owner reinsdorf intervenes

Which he might.

I still think that if KW can indeed make a few moves soon, he'll make a decent offer to MB and he'll be likely to stay. But the moves to get rid of some salary have to come first.

I think Buehrle has earned the right to do what he wants at this point in his career and I'd hope most Sox fans would be ok with it/respect his decision. If he wants to come back to the Sox at a discounted price that would obviously be welcome however if he wants to take a big pay day in Boston or New York and try and win another WS, I understand it. If he wants to jump to the North Side or go down to STL for the convenience and make more $$$ than he'd make with the Sox, I get that too. Buehrle is one of my favorite White Sox players ever and I won't think any less of him if he goes somewhere else.

My freshman year of college we all called my roommate "The Philosopher" when he was drunk. I swear his IQ actually went up 20 points when he had been drinking.

One of my closest friends is the same way. It's amazing the things he says, and it makes crazy sense/is true.

When KW was talking about moving vet pieces he was clearly talking about contracts like Floyd, Quentin, Danks and Thornton. If you move 3 of those 4 you can sign Buehrle and hopefully received enough young talent in return to have some sort of rebuild going on in the minors.

Buehrle switching 'Sides' not all that likely

MILWAUKEE—While Mark Buehrle switching from South Side to North sounds intriguing, it most likely is just a fantasy league bit of conversation.

The Cubs don’t appear to be in the market for any high-price free agents and Buehrle falls into that category. In fact, his likely $14 million for four years probably is too expensive for the White Sox.

It is very likely, however, the Cubs have contacted Buehrle’s representatives, among others, just to let them know the new guys in town are open for business.

While new Cubs GM Jed Hoyer won’t comment on specific players, he did say:

“I think it’s important to express interest in the guys you’re interested in early-on, making calls to agents to make sure they know you’re interested. Coming in late sometimes, a player looks at it like ‘where has this team been? Maybe I was a second or third choice.’ So expressing interest is important.”

Buehrle is known to have drawn interest from several teams, most notably the Marlins and Yankees. But any National League team should be interested given his all-time best 24-6 interleague record. At Wrigley Field, he is 3-2 with a 4.80 ERA.

Thirteen Teams In On Mark Buehrle

By Tim Dierkes [November 16, 2011 at 1:35pm CST]

11 teams are playing on Mark Buehrle, tweets Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM and ESPN.com: the Nationals, White Sox, Cubs, Marlins, Twins, Rangers, Yankees, Royals, Cardinals, Red Sox, and Diamondbacks. These suitors have all been confirmed by club sources, according to Bowden. The Blue Jays and Angels were named by Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports yesterday, potentially bringing the total to 13. From Bowden's list, I believe the Twins, Cardinals, and Red Sox are new suitors. Cards GM John Mozeliak said yesterday he is not seeking to alter the team's rotation, however.

If Mark goes anywhere other than St. Louis or here, I'll feel mad betrayed.

I really hope this is to gauge his market price, then come back to the Sox to match.

Mark deserves to go to the place that offers him the most money. I really don't see how anyone could argue otherwise.

He's done everything you can do for us. And I dont even put this into the equation, but some can also look at the fact that he already has given us a hometown discount. On top of everything.

He already did? In 2006 he had the worst year of his career, but since he was headed for free agency they gave him a deal that basically at market value.

ANd he has done everything. It's just if he goes back on his word, I'll feel betrayed. Simple as that.

Garfien: Buehrle to the Cubs? No chance

November 17, 2011, 10:07 am

Over the last couple days you may have heard rumblings in the news that a certain baseball team in Chicago not called the White Sox has expressed interest in signing free agent pitcher Mark Buehrle. I’m told the thought of the South Side legend calling the North Side home has produced such side effects as nausea, headaches, and especially -- heartburn.

As I sit here today, I cannot promise you that Mark will return to the White Sox. There are many teams knocking on the door, and reportedly even the team that plays at Wrigley Field. However, there is one thing I can assure you:

Mark Buehrle will not sign with the Cubs.

Rest easy, White Sox fans. It won’t happen.

How do I know?

Let’s start with what we know about Mark as a person. Growing up in a close-knit family in St. Charles, Missouri, the values that were instilled in him back then are still very much apart of his life. Ever hear the phrase “Give me a child until he is seven and I’ll give you the man?”

That’s Mark.

He was born into a world that made him a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan, and to a large degree, he remains that to this very day. The White Sox are number one in his life, the Cardinals are number two.

What do both teams have in common? A deep and utter dislike for the Cubs. Those feelings don’t go away in a day or even three decades.

Mark also knows who he is. His life has become deeply rooted, not only in White Sox lore, but in the hearts and minds of the people who come to watch him play. He knows it, and when he takes the mound at U.S. Cellular Field, he feels it. Although he wasn’t raised on the South Side, when he looks into the crowd, he doesn’t just see White Sox fans, he sees a bit of himself. Meat and potato baseball fans. That’s one of the reasons he’s become such an icon.

So would Buehrle, who has made $85 million in his baseball career -- millions more than he ever dreamed of -- jump ship to the other side of town, turning his backs on the only team he’s ever played for, the only major league fans who have ever cheered for him, just so he could chase a few extra bucks?

No way.

These are just my words. Want to hear some from Mark?

Buehrle has declined to be interviewed until he signs with the lucky team. But an interview I did with him last February during spring training revealed what he was thinking then, and is very likely thinking now. Mark has lived by the same principles his entire life. I doubt they have changed in the last nine months.

In the conversation, he first explained that if the White Sox didn’t re-sign him there would be a small list of teams he would play for.

“Obviously St. Louis would be there,” Buehrle said. “I’m not going to throw teams out [to you] because obviously getting to the end of your career you’re going to want to go to a team that’s going to win or has a chance to win. You’re not going to go to a team that’s obviously rebuilding.”

After winning 71 games and finishing 25 games out of first place, this would seemingly take the Cubs out of contention. One could argue that the White Sox situation isn’t much better, but that’s a subject for another column, one I would disagree with -- depending on the moves Kenny Williams makes this off-season. It’s too early to go down that road.

“Right now, I can’t pinpoint how many teams,” Buerhle continued. “I know there are teams in my head I will not go to no matter how much money or what the situation is. If the White Sox don’t want to sign me back after this year and some team that I’m not a fan of, or I don’t want to go play for, or if it’s just too far from home, I’m not going to go play just to make money.”

So I asked him. What about the Cubs?

“I’m not saying any names, any cities, any towns, but I have a few teams that are on my mind I would play for, and there are a few teams I wouldn’t play for.”

I told Mark that if he went to the Cubs I’d be concerned about the mental well-being of many White Sox fans.

“I could see that,” he replied. “I don’t know if I can get up for that many day games. I’m not a morning person. Spring training is about it, and then I need some sleep.”

Mark is a smart person and also a smart business man. There would be no benefit in saying directly that he wouldn’t play for the Cubs. But read between the lines. It’s all there.

Cubs President Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer are reportedly pursuing Buehrle, which is what any smart baseball executive would and should do. On paper, he’s a logical fit for the Cubs. Plus, they both have experience seeing one of their best players leave and play for their biggest rival. In 2006, Johnny Damon departed the Red Sox and signed with the hated Yankees. Wade Boggs did the same thing. They’re probably thinking, “Why not Buehrle?”

But that’s Boston and New York. This is Chicago. It’s different here. It’s the same reason Kerry Wood chose not to sign with the White Sox last winter. He wouldn’t do it.

For those of us who are from here, it’s all quite simple.

The Sox are the Sox.

The Cubs are the Cubs.

We are who we are. It’s in our blood.

The Sox are in Buehrle’s blood.

Being traded across town is one thing. It’s happened before. Even to Ron Santo. But choosing to jump ship and actually sign with the “enemy,” that’s completely another.

Some athletes chase money, some chase fame, some both.

Buehrle? He stands for much more than that.

Will he sign with the Cubs?

No offense to my friends and colleagues who are Cubs fans, but the answer is an easy one.

It can be summed up in a single word.

Never.

I seem to remember a time when some folks on this board didn't think Buerhle was worth anything. Let's hope the Sox and KW are serious about wanting him back. I wouldn't be playing cutesy about it either. I think sometimes the Sox front office have shot themselves in the foot.

We should do a poll and ask ... at what cost would u bring back Mark.

I'd say ... any cost. Just outbid everybody. It's not our money. And ticket prices will be outrageous no matter if he signs or not.

So two days ago...
