Manager Robin Ventura and his coaching staff will gather for the first time on Tuesday and Wednesday in Arizona as part of the White Sox's organizational meetings.

Ventura and his new staff, which features third base coach Joe McEwing, bench coach Mark Parent and hitting coach Jeff Manto, are scheduled to meet with Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, general manager Ken Williams and other high-level officials.

The meetings are designed more to familiarize new staff members rather than the traditional organizational meetings, when talent evaluators express their opinions on every player in the organization.

Extra innings: The Sox are close to signing reliever Brian Bruney to a minor league contract. Bruney, 29, had a 2.16 ERA in his first 19 games with the Sox before allowing 11 earned runs in his final four games before he was designated for assignment on Aug. 6. Bruney had a 1.31 ERA in 19 games for Triple-A Charlotte before his promotion on May 30.

Bruney is bad, but if he's the last reliever on the team, I'm ok with him earning that roster spot. At least he has had some success with the Sox.

I doubt he's even that. I think he'll be about the 10th reliever, behind 7 major leaguers and at least two in Charlotte.

Yeah, unless Kenny trades off most of the pen, it will be pretty catastrophic if we see Bruney in Chicago.

Santos

Ohman

Reed

Santiago

Crain

Frasor

Still leaves a spot for him if Matty is gone and Ohman is not cloned. All that means is that Infante/Axelrod didn't step up.

Which still makes him 9th in line? Thanks for the reinforcement.

I'm probably still stuck in "Ozzie" mode mentally and thus expecting them to bring the older guy north with them regardless of how well the kids actually perform.

We will finally see if that is Ozzie or Cooper when it comes to the pitching.

With three new coaches, it was virtually essential for the Chicago White Sox to conduct their first organizational meetings in four seasons.

That also was the last time the Sox held these gatherings, but this week's sessions in Scottsdale, Ariz., enabled the Sox's new coaches to share ideas with the incumbent staff members that could result in some tweaking of their operations.

“Very productive," general manager Ken Williams characterized the meetings. "We crammed in a lot in a couple days and condensed the group and got some substantive conversations done and I’ve got a better sense of the feeling of the group. So it’s very helpful."

One of the most immediate challenges will occur in spring training, where former bench coach Joey Cora structured the entire six-week operation that enabled players to adjust to their schedules well in advance.

But the additions of bench coach Mark Parent (from the Philadelphia organization), third base coach Joe McEwing and hitting coach Jeff Manto may result in new ideas.
