southsider2k5
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 8, 2011 -> 03:42 PM) I don't know. This is all based on the fact that Beckham can continue to get worse or stay exactly as bad as he is currently. Perhaps there's a GM out there who's willing to give up a prospect in the very low minors that can maybe mature into a decent starter. And perhaps Beckham has another pathetic year and nobody will give up anything at all for him next offseason and just wait until he's released to give him a chance if they have any interest at all. I'm just creating a scenario where I wouldn't mind if Beckham were traded. And to be honest, I don't care if he is or not. If that is the return, he is worth more to us on the chance that he rebounds. The odds of that are better than an A ball pitcher without a pedigree working out. The odds of that are better than an A ball pitcher without a pedigree working out. The whole caveat was that the Sox decided that he wasn't rebounding. And the A ball guy would be one of those high-upside guys that's very raw.

Dick Allen
Why would you trade him? Isn't Greg Walker the reason he hasn't hit? Walker is gone. Beckham should be an All Star now.
Lemon_44
I wouldn't trade him yet. I look at how Cleveland gave up on Brandon Phillips too early and how he blossomed for Cincy. Granted Beckham has had many more AB's at the MLB level but Phillips struggled mightily his first few years. Where it is different is that Cleveland was smart enough to send him back down after he struggled intsead of trying to have him work it out against MLB pitching. Wedge
Didn't Williams mention that the only trades involving Sox MLB talent would be for other MLB talent (or at least MLB ready)? Unless there's another Danks-for-McCarthy-esque sucker move out there, Beckham will be on the 2012 roster.

JohnCangelosi
With his defense and salary I am sure there would be some teams interested but I highly doubt we'd get anything of value for him. I'm still hoping a new hitting coach/approach etc can get him back to the short and quick swing we saw in 2009.
elrockinMT
Sometimes it takes some time for a player to develop. GB was rushed to the majors and has played two different positions from what he was a great college star at and he has done very well in the field. Plus sometimes you just have to have patience with young developing talent. Apparently we have a limited amount of that and think we have to have an instant Babe Ruth or the player is a failure. True, but he really stunk last year at the plate. He could have 'helped' bail out a horrific lineup had he hit like Beckham is supposed to hit. Actually yes, we do have a limited amount of that...for financial reasons. This is Gordon Beckham's last $500k league minimum salary season. Next year he is eligible for arbitration. If he hits like he did this year, then he will suddenly be earning a lot more money to be a defensive replacement at 2b. That is a major problem...that is why you run out of patience. You might be able to get by on his defense if that continues to be solid, for 1 season, but there's no way he'd get offered arbitration on his 2nd year, where his salary would push upwards of $5 million. It's not about some arbitrary "patience". That's the MLB schedule. He has 1-2 more seasons before he would become a DFA candidate at his current production level. If he has another 2011 in 2012, he is virtually DFA'd in my book. This really is his make or break year to show his confidence is there. What worries me the most by reading the article on WS.com was the fact that he said some days he was in the batters box and felt like he didn't even have a chance. That's awful, and he shouldn't be on the field if his confidence isnt there...

2nd_city_saint787
I wouldnt trade him in the offseason unless youre absolutely getting a good deal. Even then I'd rather they wait to see what a new hitting coach can do with him.....Why do hitters have sophomore slumps?? could this have been the case with gordo??
