Sox Sign Veal, Quintana

NEWS: The White Sox have agreed to terms with free agent left-handed pitchers Donnie Veal and Jose Quintana.

 

Veal, 27, combined to go 0-2 with a 4.22 ERA (15 ER/32.0 IP) and 31 strikeouts in 19 appearances (five starts) between Class A Bradenton, Class AA Altoona, Class AAA Indianapolis and Rookie Gulf Coast League Pirates in 2011. He did not pitch until May 22 while recovering from Tommy John surgery performed on June 4, 2010.

 

Quintana, 22, spent the entire 2011 season with Class A Tampa in the Yankees farm system, going 10-2 with a 2.91 ERA (33 ER/102.0 IP), one save and 88 strikeouts in 30 appearances (14 starts). He limited opponents to a .236 (86-364) average and was 6-1 with a 2.83 ERA (20 ER/63.2 IP) as a starter.

So whats the deal with Quintana, he looks like he could be something and is only 22...

 

Too many walks or something?

 

His walk rate was 2.5/9.

 

Um, was he in the minors too long? He signed with the Mets at 17...

That is a great question. Yankees fans sure seemed to like him. This link has some fan chatter, including his stuff.

I'm just confused by why the Yankees would just let him go. He will be 23 when the season starts, and probably be assigned to Birmingham. That's an appropriate age, and his numbers have been good. I wonder if he is just a terrible teammate or something? Off the field issues?
