Sox could lose Comp pick for Buehrle

In a bizarre twist that would be a reminder of baseball’s bad old days, there’s a scenario being floated at the general managers meetings in which the White Sox and Cubs would get no draft choice compensation if they lose Mark Buehrle and Aramis Ramirez to free agency.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that the CBA being finalized between management and the union would eliminate compensation for Type B free agents, effective immediately. It makes no sense that the rules would change in mid-stream but until further clarification this has to be considered as a possibility.

Buehrle, who last season was 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 31 starts, fell just below the cutoff for Type A status because of a quirk in the ranking system, which relies on a two-year performance metric engineered by Elias. According to the website mlbtraderumors.com, nine relief pitchers rank as Type A free agents, compared to only two starting pitchers (C.J. Wilson and Roy Oswalt).

Buehrle is the highest ranked starting pitcher on the list of Type B free agents.

Ramirez, who is definitely leaving the Cubs, is the highest ranked infielder on the Type B list generated by mlbtraderumors.com. First baseman Carlos Pena is also listed as a Type B free agent.

Assuming the original teams offer arbitration, Type A free agents bring two high draft picks in compensation (one in either the first or second round, depending on where the signing team picks in the draft, and another in a supplemental round between the first and second round) while Type B free agents bring only a pick in the supplemental round.

Under Theo Epstein, the Red Sox worked the draft compensation system brilliantly, gaining a net 16 picks in nine years. He would figure to gain at least one pick in the 2012 draft (for Ramirez) under the current system.

It’s hard to see what would be gained by eliminating compensation for Type B free agents. But this is a developing story that could affect both Chicago teams negatively.

Changing it in the middle of the offseason? That is just a horrible idea. Seriously, that is just incompetent.

Yeah, at least give the GMs time to plan ahead.

KW could've attempted to re-sign earlier or trade him at the deadline.

I can understand the union wanting this as soon as possible. Now what are they willing to give up to achieve that and will it be enough for the owners to go along with it.
