"Among the Sox minor league players who weren't protected were pitcher Terry Doyle, outfielders Jordan Danks, Justin Greene and Brandon Short and infielder Tyler Kuhn. They are eligible for the Rule 5 draft on Dec. 8."

I am surprised on Terry Doyle, not so much on the rest of them. I could see a team taking a shot on Doyle.

Who did Kuhn piss off? I know he's 25, but he had a great season and is versatile around the field. Don't get it.

Doyle surprises me.

Kuhn is a utility player at best. No need to lock up a 40 man roster spot for him unless he is going to be on the 25 man roster, which he isn't.

I guess, but it wouldn't surprise me if gets taken and plays decent for somebody next year.

I'm iffy on this one.

He does seem like he's got a decent shot at the big leagues, but I'd have to ask my scouts whether they thought he'd be too much of a drag on the roster having to keep him around the entire year next year.

I think D2 is an excellent candidate to pick in the rule 5, because even if he doesn't hit well, he's supposedly a plus-defensive CF, which means that he can fill an almost daily role for someone coming in as a defensive replacement. He gives value to a team even if he doesn't hit.

Doyle, Kuhn and Short all surprise me, as does Heath getting protected.

I wonder when the deadline is for this - things could change again. Could be that Doyle gets sent as a piece in a trade before then too.

Heath surprised me too. I heard nothing about him this year.

Deunte Heath

2006 19th round pick by ATL. 26 years old, turns 27 during 2012 season. Been in the Sox system in 2010 and 2011, as a reliever then a starter. Was primarily a starter with the ATL system. His K numbers are way up since joining the Sox org, walks still a little high.

Drafted 3 consecutive years before eventually signing with ATL.

I know nothing about his stuff.

Heath is righty.

Right now the Sox have Ohman, Santiago, Thornton, Quintana, Veal, and Leesman on the 40-man from the left side.

They also re-signed Septimo to a minor league deal.

You are correct. My mistake.

Also, WTF? The kid is awful. 94 BB in about 160 IP.

I agree with you Balta, but don't forget we have a surplus in the OF including a large million dollar albatross non performer in CF we are keeping.

The big league club definitely has a surplus of OF in the near term, but a defensive minded CF is always going to be something useful if you can mold him into a "Better than Rios" level hitter in another year or two.

I mean, maybe there's a bigger plan for those roster spots that will emerge in the next 2 weeks. If not, he'd be the next guy on my list to protect, because I think he'd be the most logical one to draft if I were a bottom-dwelling team.

Or the Sox realize lefties are hard to come by? I do like Matt, but would not be surprised if he is traded.

Other than just dumping money, I don't think they should get rid of Thornton. When he was in his normal setup role, he was still good most of the time.

I really like the idea of a young long reliever--either Stewart or Axelrod, and Reed, Frasor, Ohman, Crain, Thornton, and Santos. That's a pretty solid bullpen I could support. Once they start throwing in a younger lefty, it becomes worse in a hurry.
