We just need a Babe Ruth Award already for the leagues best hitter, then MVP won't be an issue and can go to THE best player in each league without ignoring hitters for the entire year if a pitcher wins (like this).

But Babe Ruth was a pitcher too

So does the Babe Ruth award go to the best hitting pitcher or best pitching hitter? I'm so confused...

Just call it the Ted Williams award then.

Under the current qualifications, Verlander earned it.

There needs to be a Best Hitter Award though.

How about we just call it the Hank Aaron award, note that it already exists, and that Kemp and Bautista already won it this year?

The problem is that nobody cares about anything other than the Cy Young and MVP (somewhat the ROY's). One of the two major awards needs to be solely for pitching and the other solely for hitting.

No one caring about the award doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Don't know where you got your numbers from. Bautista had a .896 OPS the second half.

Hmm, I guess I got fed wrong information from someone. I should have double checked.

It's an absolute shame that Pedro didn't win the MVP in 99, but Verlander somehow does in 2011.

Tigers ace Justin Verlander appeared on 27 of 28 ballots for American League MVP, but was omitted by Jim Ingraham of the Herald-News in Ohio, who voted Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista first.

Ingraham doesn't think pitchers should be eligible.

"If I thought pitchers should be eligible, I would have voted him No. 1," he told the Free Press. "Verlander pitched in 21% of his team's games. If this was the NFL, that would be three games. I know it's two different sports, but I can't see a quarterback winning the MVP if he appeared in only three games."

Ingraham said he decided on his no-pitchers stance during his deliberations over the award in the final weeks of the season.

"People are upset because they think I don't realize he's a great pitcher," he said. "To me that's not the issue. The issue is should he be eligible for the MVP?

"I appreciate the greatness of Verlander. I disagree that pitchers should be included in the MVP voting."

Let the records show that the only guy to hit HR off Verlander & Weaver (1 and 2 in AL Cy Young vote) in 2011 was Adam Dunn.

:lolhitting

So obviously, to fix Dunn, put him in against Verlander and Weaver.
