Charlie Weis Thread

Recommended Posts

He is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. Unfortunately, I think he's too nice to be a college head coach because he's not cutthroat enough to succeed at recruiting, and if he couldn't succeed at recruiting at ND, I have a hard time seeing him do it well at Kansas.

If he does find some way to get good players, especially on offense, he sure will coach them up to perform on the field.

I think his calling in life is to be an NFL offensive coordinator, and I have no idea why he didn't just stick with that once things didn't work out at ND.

I do like to remind my Michigan friends that Tom Brady has won zero Super Bowls without his ND offensive coordinator.

Really? Everything I ever heard at ND was that he was a pompous ass who was full of himself. All of the old ND alums hated him because he thought his s*** didn't stink.

Either way, the Weis hiring has been good comedy through most of the NCAA. Then again, it's Kansas football, you can't expect to hire much better.

Oh, and greg, there is a NCAA football thread for topics just like these where this has already been mentioned.

All of the old ND alums hated him because Charlie chose to spend a lot of time in the community, especially with disadvantaged kids, instead of schmoozing with a bunch of rich assholes who think they're entitled to everything in the world. Those people are why the rest of the country hates ND.

If Kansas has any alums like that, they're probably drooling all over Bill Self and will leave Charlie alone.

Weis failed recruiting at ND? WTF? He had top ten classes seemingly every year. It was his coaching that sucked and he "babied" the players.

If ND gets a couple decent recruits, they get rated as a top ten class because it sells magazines.

Charlie was good at getting offensive skill players.

He couldn't recruit offensive linemen or defensive players worth anything at all.

Helping kids in the community doesn't automatically disqualify you from being a jackass, and people from everywhere pretty much label him one. I don't know, maybe they are just jealous.

ND alums are like that, but pissing in the face of ex-players is no way to run a college football program.

With all due respect, you need to get out more.

Notre Dame alums calling OTHER people pompous asses? I guess they'd know, right?

Yeah, recruiting is Weis' strongsuit, he always could bring in the top players. Couldnt coach worth s***

He could coach, his offense is just rather compelx and he couldn't coach it in the time-frame he has with collegiate athletes (e.g., limited practice time).

I dont know, I would say that Clausen and company regressed at the end of his tenure rather than started to understand it.

No matter what, the talent that he consistently brought into ND should have gotten him a better record

Couldnt do it at ND, goes to Florida, they have one of the worst offensive seasons they've had in years.

When exactly is his offense going to work on a collegiate level?

I never said it did. I think he's an idiot for going back to college. He's an excellent offensive coordinator in the NFL and will not be more than that. Maybe he could have succeeded as an NFL head coach but coaching at the collegiate level is not his strong suit because he isn't able to spend the time it takes to get players coached up to be in a position to succeed in his offense/system.

Also, lets not forget that when recruits sign with major colleges they automatically move up in rivals/scout ratings anyway. It isn't like Brian Kelly, whose a pretty damn bright mind himself, was able to take Notre Dame with the talent he inherited and immediately kick butt. Now if someone wants to say that is because Kelly is a lousy coach I guess that is a whole nother debate.

Weis succeeds with players that have already been taught how to play. He fails in the teaching part of the job. You get a team loaded with juniors and seniors, they can easily win more than they should. Freshmen and sophomores? Not so much.

He's really good at planning, really bad at implementation.

ND's offense was awesome every year under Weis except 2007. The defense was what did him under.

Weis was know as being arrogant from the moment he stepped on ND's campus. Could he be a nice guy when meeting fans. I'm sure he could. Most people aren't an ass ALL the time. But I believe it was his arrogance that got in his way. A little humility may have given him a different perspective.

This recruiting story is true and gives a fair representation on how he handled recruits and their families. The story was told by the father of the player.

Michigan OL Michael Schofield is from the Chicago area and was a ND fan his whole life. It was his dream to play at ND. He was recruited by Notre Dame and Michigan, among others. He had visited Michigan and really liked it. But he didn't want to make any commitment until he got to visit ND. He had been to campus and games before, but not on a recruiting visit (I believe it was still unofficial) where he had a chance to talk to the coaches and get a deeper perspective. Michael and his family got the campus tour and talked to various coaches and administrators and really liked what they saw. Then he went into Weis' office to meet with the coach.

Weis went on and on about the tradition of Notre Dame and how great they had been and were going to be. Typical recruiting stuff. His father stated he laid it on so thick though that it seemed a little off for some reason. Weis asked him when he was going to commit to Notre Dame. When Michael told him he still wanted to visit Michigan again and possibly another school or two, Weis appeared to get irritated. He went back to how Notre Dame is the perfect place and there should be no reason he would pick anywhere else. His tone was bordering on condescending. Then he looked at him and said (I'm paraphrasing) Michael, can you give me one good reason why you should not pick ND? Why would you pick or even visit anywhere else? He came across as more irritated and condescending the more he talked. When Michael told him that he liked everything ND has to offer but its his life and he wanted to be sure before making a commitment, Weis snapped with something to the effect of...

OK Michael that's fine. You do what you have to do. But I'm going to tell you that we fully expect you to be in this Notre Dame class. Then he looked at his father and said I don't see why he won't just commit right now. Mr. Schofield replied "I think Michael just told you why." Weis replied "then go visit the other places that don't hold a candle to this place. And if for some reason you choose another school, I expect you personally to call me and tell me why that school is better than ND. You owe that to me if this is the direction you want to go.

With that the Schofield family left. Everyone of them including mom, left not liking Coach Weis much and thinking much less of ND than when the visit had started. Ultimately he visited Michigan again and committed to the Wolverines and never looked back. They never called Coach Weis personally, but when they told one of the ND assistants, his reply was "Coach Weis is going to be really pissed at you if you don't call and that may affect whether ND even looks at your brother (they had a younger son who was a OL also)". Those conversations just cemented that he made the right choice by not going to ND.

When you're down by 2 with under a minute left, on the 10-yard line, with a kicker who is 12-for-12 and you call a pass play, yes, you are a lousy coach.
