That cash loses it value next year once the cap is in place. Theo is smart to spend it now while he still can, even if the cost of young talent is far more expensive than it's been previously. The White Sox rush players to the MB team to contend whether right or wrong. The Gio and Hudson trades are two other examples of placing the MLB team in front of developing talent. Gio was a sandwich pick or second rounder, right? In the end, if we somehow ended up with Soler or Cespedes, everyone would feel much better...even though the odds would seem to be against it at the current moment, with the insane bidding wars taking place over "premium" Cuban talent. The plan, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, is still to have Cespedes in a big league camp by the third week of February. The five-tool centerfielder will be a rich man before he sees one pitch in spring training, as industry sources tell ESPNChicago.com that the bidding for the Cuban defector may go as high as six years, $60 million. The Chicago Cubs and the Miami Marlins may be driving the price up. Katz explained, "I think we can come to terms with no execution of contract and no playing." Katz is "reasonably confident" Cespedes will be signed in time for camp this year. I'm thinking you are correct. If Cespedes gets anything near $50 million, I'm thinking Soler gets around $30 million. Considering the Sox owe Rios $38.5 million, those prices are staggering IMO. Even if the Sox miss on both, I hope their figures are much smaller. Giving these guys all that money just gives guys like Boras more ammo.
