The linsanity and jokes are all fun and games until someone starts taking it all seriously. When comments are made about how he's "definitely going to be a difference maker," someone has to step in and speak with some semblance of realism and a basic understand of what sample size is.

It depends on your definition of difference maker.

 

The Lin-less Knicks were terrible. They needed somebody to run the offense efficiently. Not Toney Douglas chucking up 15 shots a game and making only 5 of them. Not Iman Shumpert doing the same thing. Lin doesn't have to score 30 points a game to be a difference maker for New York. All he has to do is run the offense like a real PG, which I think he should be capable of, regardless of the 4 game sample size.

 

Now, when people start talking about MVP, I'll have to start raining on parades too. :)

By this logic, just about any point guard would have been a different maker. Toney Douglas is atrocious and Iman Shumpert isn't actually a point guard at all.

 

I'd like to think the term difference maker would be reserved for someone that is actually a special talent, but I guess that's my own definition of it (as you alluded to).

Lin is a great story. He's had an amazing run, and it's been fun to see. But when the media starts hyping it past reason and fans start making drastic conclusions based on a grand total of four games, it gets a little out of hand. It doesn't make Lin's run any less impressive, but it doesn't hurt to remember 4 games is an incredibly trivial percent of games in the season. Plenty of players have been great for four games (hell, TEN games) and turned out to be bad players.

While I don't believe Lin will be a good PG for a contender, he definitely has a future as a backup. Has a good I.Q., solid vision, can shoot, drive and so far... is efficient and is very solid defensively. He'll be overrated by Knick fans and the media for a long time, but they've had crap PG play since Felton left, so he looks like a god send right now. (and he has been) We'll see with time, but he's been terrific so far.

Depends on the system he's in really.

 

D'Antoni's offense is just so PG friendly, Lin can chuck up 25 shots a game ATM if he wants to. With the way he's shooting the basketball currently, of course he's going to have some big nights.

 

But what he's also shown in that if they try to double him on the pick and roll, he's good enough to find the open guy in the corner. But the Knicks don't really have good enough 3PT shooters ATM (besides Novak) to capitalize on that either.

 

All I know is that Mike D'Antoni would probably be fired right now if it wasn't for Jeremy Lin.
