caulfield12 Posted November 21, 2012 Share Posted November 21, 2012 Flight was one of Denzel Washington's best performances but it's getting buried by Twihards and Skyfall. Argo, definitely a Top 5-10 movie this year and a surefire Academy nomination for Affleck, who's now directed 3 pretty nifty little flicks after almost being buried in the Bennifer days. There was that movie with Liv Tyler (Jersey Girl), and the emminently forgettable GIGLI. Arkin deserves a supporting actor nod for Argo as well, and John Goodman's in both Flight and Argo, excellent in each. Everyone's already gone and given DDL the Best Actor award for Lincoln, we'll see if anyone can come close to knocking him off his perch. In the viewing line-up... Silver Linings Playbook Life of Pi (Ang Lee) The Sessions (Helen Hunt and John Hawkes, also in Lincoln) Lincoln (of course) Anna Karenina (is it just me, or is Keira Knightley not attractive as she used to be in her Bend it Like Beckham days?) Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Dave Franco. Could be a good one, but also could end up cliche. I don't know that I enjoyed it as much as Casino Royale, despite most reviewers claiming I would. However, I'll watch it a few more times before making a decision one way or the other. Also, watched the movie in a theater full of old white people who couldn't remember what characters were who, and old black people on the other side who were commenting on the movie and trying to reason with Denzel. caulfield12 Posted November 27, 2012 Share Posted November 27, 2012 Hope we'll get the 3-D version of Life of Pi(scene) here in China. It's an Ang Lee (Taiwanese) movie, so it will be interesting to see the reaction of it on the mainland. I just watched the movie online and am halfway through the book. It's one of those 10 or so movies that has to be watched on an IMAX or in 3D to truly appreciate...especially once the story gets going out on the water and in nature. I found it interesting (but not unexpected) that they introduced a few typical Hollywood-ish plot points that were not in the book...but that's to be expected when you're taking a $100 million bet on such a quirky/eclectic book that defies definition. As far as a not-so-famous movie I'd like to recommend, it's "MISS BALA," about a Mexican beauty pageant contestant caught up in a narco-trafficking ring near the US border (Baja California). Very gritty and intense, keeps you interested, that's for sure. I read about the movie in an article commenting on a "real life" beauty queen who was killed in the crossfire in Mexico (Sinaloa) a couple of days ago. Reminded me of living in Colombia, watching that movie (a bit similar to Maria, Full of Grace, but even more visceral and haunting). After having watched Life of Pi, I would put it at #3, behind Avatar and How To Train Your Dragon and in front of Beowulf. Definitely worth watching this movie in the theatre.
