Because it was.

UPDATE: An earlier version of this story quoted Jay Cutler's Facebook page. A source confirms to NBC 5's Paula Faris that the Facebook page confirming the breakup was a fake. The account has since been deactivated. It's yet another page in the mismanagement of Jay Cutler's public persona, as multiple outlets quoted the page as fact because that appeared to be the only access available.

Over the weekend, rumors flew that Jay Cutler and Kristin Cavallari had called off their engagement. Cavallari's reps confirmed the news to People magazine.

People reported Sunday that Cutler ended the 10-month relationship with the reality TV star just after they had set a date, registered for gifts and were thrown an engagement party by friends.

"She got dumped," says another source. "She's absolutely devastated. She can't believe this is happening."

Jay has been silent on the issue. The latest People article claims that Cutler was a controlling boyfriend who smothered Cavallari.

Again, Cutler hasn't gone on record, and likely won't as he's famously averse to media coverage.

In fact, another report says the media scrutiny that came along with dating a former reality television star turned him off.

Many observers think it could be helpful to his game because rather than focus on wedding plans, and gift registeries, he can focus on recievers and championships. Take out those feelings on the Packers, OK?

Cavallari also turned to social media for comfort. On Sunday, she tweeted, "Thanks for the support. Love u guys."

Bears could use some help. Obviously WR, OL, DL and CB. Some interesting LB too. There were rumors about Cullen Jenkins earlier. Rumers now about Jason Babin and Brandon Mebane. Mike Sims-Walker. Sidney Rice. It's going to be nutty.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:37 AM)
I just hope the Bears front office still isn't gullible enough to believe Hester is a #1 WR. They need a big, playmaking #1 WR for Cutler. If Rice's hip is 100% (and that's a big if), he is an ideal fit.

I think the Bears know that they need a WR, but they also know that there's a big risk in overpaying for a WR.

And continue to hear Steve Weatherford will replace Brad Maynard as #Bears punter

I'm down.

I have to admit, I had no idea Maynard sucked balls last year.

The Chicago Bears worked to build their class of undrafted rookie free agents on Monday, agreeing to a deal that will bring former Oregon State center Alex Linnenkohl to training camp, according to a league source.

Sources said the club is expected to sign former Virginia Tech tight end Andre Smith, former Pittsburgh safety Dom DeCicco, ex-Northwestern defensive tackle Corbin Bryant, a former standout at Morgan Park, former Troy outside linebacker Mario Addison and former Mississippi State center J.C. Brignone, TCU receiver Jimmy Young, Texas A&M-Kingsville linebacker Tressor Baptiste, NW Missouri State cornerback Ryan Jones on Tuesday.

Teams could officially begin negotiating with Monday at 5 p.m. CT, but can't sign them until Tuesday at 9 a.m.

A former teammate of Bears second-round pick Stephen Paea and former three-year starter for the Beavers, Linnenkohl (6-foot-3, 303 pounds) was named all-Pac 10 as a senior, but missed the final portion of the season because of a severely sprained ankle.

Smith (6-foot-5, 259 pounds), meanwhile, developed a reputation as a strong blocker at Virginia Tech, where he also caught 20 passes for 195 yards and five touchdowns as a senior. DeCicco (6-foot-3, 232 pounds) split time as a senior at Pittsburgh playing strong safety and weakside linebacker, and led the Panthers with 94 tackles (67 solos), and five interceptions.

Michael C. Wright covers the Bears for ESPNChicago.com and ESPN 1000.

I was just told four teams have "legitimate interest" in free agent center Olin Kreutz. #Bears

skjensen Sean Jensen

Hearing #Bears may be interested in Jacksonville Jaguars LB Justin Durant. He has 42 starts in last four seasons.

This is getting ugly.

Bengals owner Mike Brown finally acknowledged Tuesday that Carson Palmer has retired from football.

Palmer would be willing to play if the Bengals traded him, but Brown reiterated that won't happen. "Carson signed a contract, he made a commitment," said Brown. "He gave us his word. ... We expected him to perform here. If he is going to walk away from his commitment we aren’t going to reward him for doing it." It's nice to see Brown finally concede the obvious, but it doesn't mean he's any less stubborn. It's a shame for a player with 2-3 halfway decent seasons left.
