That is the one job I havent heard Lovie connected with. I suppose it is possible, but I havent heard anyone interviewing there yet

Looks like Greg Roman will get the Jaguars job, with Alex Smith following him there

“The way he relates to the quarterback,” Gannon said when asked what makes Trestman unique. “Every quarterback who has played for him has gotten better.

“If you ask me if there’s one thing Chicago needs, it’s someone to get Jay Cutler back on track. If you look at [Cutler’s] footwork and ballhandling, he has major issues. Some fundamental things have slipped by the wayside because he hasn’t been coached properly. Marc could come in there and get him straightened out.”

The guy had success with Jake freakin Plummer (for a year), was the QB coach & OC for Rich Gannon's MVP season. He's certainly no sure thing but I feel like hes getting way less of a chance from the masses due to the fact that hes currently in the CFL.

I'm starting to warm up to Trestman. However, it is a huge risk going from Lovie to someone like Trestman. Ballsy to go outside the norm.

No I think the masses would be more than okay with Testman as an OC where his entire job is helping Cutler and getting the offense to work.

But if Trestman is the HC, he is going to have to work with both sides of the ball, so he cant put as much time and effort into the offense.

For example, if the Bears kept Lovie and hired Trestman, I think many people would have read these comments with great enthusiasm.

That is what Marinelli is for.

Id be okay with that, but I still think its a step down from Lovie Smith as HC, Trestman as OC and Marinelli as DC.

Especially as its a veteran team and they all responded to Lovie. I would need to know more about the previous OC hiring decisions, and how much was Emery/Angelo, and how much was Lovie.

(edit to your edit)

And yes, Arians (imo) is the better candidate.

That would have been great...problem is...you couldn't really let Lovie hire yet another OC.

I think it's clear Trestman has impressed in interviews since his HC stints in Canada, but GMs are worried about tying their jobs to an unconventional horse. If Emery thinks Trestman has the best plan, I'll go along. I'm interested to see what kind of personnel he brings with him.

Trestman will either be a great hire or a total train wreck...........no middle ground.

Anyone aware of any connections between Marinelli and Trestman? I find it doubtful that Trestman would have his defensive coordinator be somebody that he doesn't know.

Could be he may bring some staff members fom Montreal............never thought I would ever type that in talking about DA Bears.

Jeff Dickerson ‏@ESPNChiBears

As @BradBiggs reported earlier, Dave Toub will not be back with the #Bears next season. Had a great run here.

He did an outstanding job here, but special teams weren't very good in 2012.

Biggs actually talked about how it would be preferable for Trestman to keep Marinelli around to maintain the defense. It is why Marinelli is still under contract

From what Ive read MTL just hired all new coordinators so Im not sure he really has any of his own guys left on that staff.

Here's an article about how Steve Young sees the Cutler/Trestman duo working out: http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bears/post...a-qb-specialist

The only problem I have is that Trestman was a "west coast" offense guy. I don't know if he has changed but that type of offense would not suit Cutler.

In Denver, Cutler ran a West Coast offense with a 60-40 pass-run ratio.

Jay ran the west coast offense in Denver and has the best seasons of his professional career.

The past week or so Ive done some reading on Trestman and everything Ive read sounds really positive for what were trying to do. When I first heard his name as a candidate and saw he was from the CFL I thought it was a joke, but he has been golden everywhere he has went offensively. Its also nice to hear these glowing endorsements from quarterbacks he has coached in the past. Looking at his resume there doesnt seem to be anywhere that hes went where he didnt have a a top offense in the respective league he was coaching.

I think if he was the coach we need to either keep Marinelli or bring in a good DC because it doesnt sound like he has anything to do with defense. I also think a WCO would help cover some of the weaknesses with our OL by getting rid of the ball quicker. We also have pretty good personnel for it. Marshall, Jeffrey and Bennett all strike me as being able to excel in that system and Forte is a good receiving back.

Yeah, but I would rather gamble on a guy like Trestman than live with just missing the playoffs like we mostly did with Lovie. On the aggregate, a 9-7 season looks good for a career record, but if 9-7 continually misses the playoffs what good it to be two games above .500 each year? The goal is the playoffs each and every year to give yourself a shot at making a run at the SB. Lovie just didn't get in enough.

And if we keep Marinelli, we have essentially kept the one area/scheme where Lovie excelled while getting rid of the area/scheme he sucked at: offense.

"The job [of quarterback] is like a Japanese garden," Steve Young said. "It takes a lot of care. It takes a lot of time. It takes intricate work. … I've got to believe that if someone came in and in a resonant way could speak to him -- like when you put your finger near a crystal glass, it starts to sing to you -- that resonant sound that happens between quarterback and coach, that he would respond to that. Why wouldn't you respond to that?"

What a fruit.
