maggsmaggs
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 08:03 AM) I adore this hire immediately. Yep. Guy has a great track record of developing OLinemen and putting points on the board. Saints have been one of the league's best offensives over the past years and really haven't had elite skill position guys drafted high, they had to develop them. Graham. Coslton. Etc. Steve9347
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 07:25 AM) Maybe we will get to see some offense in Chicago for once! I'll believe that when I see it.
Balta1701
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 09:14 AM) Yep. Guy has a great track record of developing OLinemen and putting points on the board. Not just for the record, but for the scheme. I've been saying this for years. When you watch the Saints play a game against a tough pass rusher, there is never a snap where a lineman is set up one on one against that rusher. Every pass play, a TE or a RB takes a chip at that rusher, or he gets double-teamed, or the play rolls away from him, etc. And then they use the running game, draws, and screens, around that guy to get him off balance. They identify threats on the D-Line and focus attention on them. It's literally the exact opposite of what the Bears did. Game 2 of the year, despite all their talk about how they were going to change systems and give the O-line more help, there you had J'Marcus Webb lined up one on one against Clay Matthews, once again, with no help. No screens, no rollouts, it was just assumed Webb would block him. Even if Webb did a good job with that, on 40-50 dropbacks, if Matthews got through 10% of the time, he'd have hit Cutler 5 times. That's making a serious impact if a couple of those are sacks.
Kyyle23
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 08:04 AM) Eh, other than OL and TE what other needs does this team have? The defense is pretty good across all levels, definitely NFL average or better. The RB's are solid, the QB is set. I'm really not opposed to going after a big name WR as long as there is a plan behind it to fix the OL. A Marshall-Wallace-Jeffery-Bennett WR group with a competent TE and Matt Forte could be really, really dangerous. Thats what I said in the followup post, TE and OL are much more pressing needs. Of course that WR group would be great, but Wallace is going to be an in-demand FA and I dont want the Bears jumping to the top of the bidding before they address other needs. There are some teams with serious room to use on a guy like that as well. IIRC, the Dolphins have something like $50 million to play with if they let everyone go. I'm just saying leave that on the table as long as the pressing issues are resolved. I'm talking minimum of 1st or 2nd round pick AND solid free agent signing directed to the OL and finding a TE however they can. After that, if they have flexibility left, I'm all for another WR. WHarris1
Since Kromer became the Saints OL coach they have ranked 4th, 5th, 2nd, 3rd in sacks allowed. Drools.
DukeNukeEm
Honestly, Kromer alone adds about as much to our OL's effectiveness as signing a free agent or spending a 1st day pick in the draft. Dude knows how to coach those guys.

Dude knows how to coach those guys. The most talented O-line coach in history couldn't make some of the players on the Bears better. They need at least 3 new o-line. Maybe 4. Other than Lance Louis (who is a free agent) the Bears have no starting caliber NFL offensive linemen, Kromer should allow us to make the most out of whatever we get. Balta1701
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 09:28 AM) The most talented O-line coach in history couldn't make some of the players on the Bears better. Do we seriously know that? They literally haven't even tried putting those guys in a position to succeed. They kept saying they would and then put them in a position to fail. If you ask Derrick Rose to guard Dwight Howard for 30 games, you're going to come out of it thinking that the most talented coach in the world couldn't make Rose into an effective player. Well of course, you've put him in a position where he's guaranteed to fail!

Chisoxfn
QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 05:01 AM) Jerry Rice compares Trestman to Bill Walsh. It was a very nice hire for the Bears. I got to meet Trestman when he was with the 49ers, he seem like a great guy Look for the Bears to sign a guy like Mike Wallace, Trestman loves having 2 star WR's They have far more pressing needs, like resigning Melton and finding an oline. Bears also reportedly hire Saints interim interim head coach (and oline coach) as the OC/Oline coach which spells the end of Tice. Very curious what happens with Marinelli. I really hope he stays. DukeNukeEm
I'm interested to see if Kromer thinks he can make Gabe Carimi the player we thought he could be. It'd be nice if he could at least fill a guard spot effectively (I've given up all hope on him being an NFL tackle).
Chisoxfn
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 05:37 AM) That's pretty surprising since Rice was really happy when Trestman was let go by the 49ers. He hated the 2 yard routes he was running. http://jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/...7/1c1rice_.html The thing that concerns me is he's from the Jimmy Johnson tree, Wanne, Norv Turner, both prety much busts as Head Coaches. He's also kind of calm like Lovie. If the Bears don't win right away, the fans are going after him. I'm glad he's calm. I still think I'd have preferred him as an OC but we'll see what he does. His credentials seem decent and he has a plan. But we'll see what he does at the NFL level. Big difference from the CFL. This has major bust potential. I will say its a ballsy hire. If the GM misses on a guy everyone thinks is a good candidate, he may get a chance to hire another coach...going after someone like Trestman...if you whiff on him...you whiffed as a GM and are done. Chisoxfn
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 05:52 AM) Say goodbye to Urlacher then. This was more the fact that Toub directly competed with Trestman for the job and Trestman was the better man. There could be a lot of sour grapes in that situation. Sounds like one of the guys we interviewed for HC might end up our special teams coach.
Chisoxfn
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 05:57 AM) He is, whether you like it or not. Hopefully he is dealt, but still, Bennett was just given new paper and you have Alshon lining up too. No need to go out and get a big FA WR over more pressing needs Hester will be waived. I think he has a big bonus/cap hit this year so I'd be stunned if they kept him.
