wow. so here's the thing. actors and directors and filmmakers think their industry is important? what??? how dare they! Jenks do you think your job matters? do you think your job makes a difference? should we yell at you for saying so? come the f*** on.

and they were not giving her a standing ovation because she was black. Black actresses have won awards before. No longer is it groundbreaking. They were applauding because she's a friend who'd been working in the industry for 20+ years who FINALLY got offered a role that wasn't filled with fart jokes, and she delivered in a huge way. I thought it was awesome. that's what you don't get. the oscars are a party for this big group of friends to celebrate the good work they did in the last year. it's just like an end of the year office party, just televised on national tv. you don't like it, don't watch it.

Not to turn this into anything that might sound racist, but...

Yes, black actors and actresses have won the award before. But I don't think you can sit there and tell me that the crowd doesn't make a bigger deal out of it whenever it happens. Go back and watch when Denzel Washington or Halle Berry won.

For Best Actress, yes. But there was obviously Hattie McDaniel. Again, that still doesn't explain Denzel. I know this is personal to you, being an actor and all, but it's quite obvious that they make a bigger deal of it when it's a minority actor.

The problem is that about half of those were chosen over better candidates. It's not just those particular cases either. Slumdog Millionaire won over about half a dozen better movies that year. I can't explain it perfectly, but it was shoved down our throats as a feel-good, never-give-up-hope, help-yourself picture in a down economic year.

It's just that they often choose a movie or actor to make a statement rather than the most deserving one.

I'd say movies like Forrest Gump, Rain Man and especially Schindler's List were deserving. Slumdog Millionaire as well.

It's all matter of personal opinion. I hate musicals, but I'm not going to say the movie Chicago didn't deserve to win best picture, maybe the academy thought it was the best movie that year. I just don't think it's some plot to make certain movies win.

On a side note, I hate award shows. I think the idea of making art a competition is incredibly stupid.

I'm trying to figure out whether the original post was referencing that or not...

Yeah, in that episode, one of the characters makes a movie that is 4 hours long, about the Holocaust, the main character is a mentally retarded kid that's alcoholic and he has a puppy with cancer. And at the end, he hugs Hermann Goring. The title of the movie is the main character's name, "Oscar Gold."

I see what you're saying and I totally agree. When Octavia Spencer won the Oscar, and the crowd (98% white people) gave her a standing ovation, I just busted out laughing. She may well be completely deserving, I have no idea since I didn't see the movie. But the whole scene had this subtext (read in aristocratic english accent): "Oh! Look at us. We made a film about African Americans, and I dare say she was quite good. Yes, yes. Let's congratulate ourselves her for the work we she did. We're so forward thinking unlike the rest of the uncivilized masses in this country! Bravo!"

Maybe if Hollywood stopped the pretentious, arrogant bulls*** every year people wouldn't think that way. But it's hard not to when people like Clooney talk about movies single-handedly starting every minority rights/acceptance movement in the country's history. Or when they beat you over the head with "movies are what make us live from one moment to the next" crap.

Crash: HERP DERP DO YOU KNOW THAT RACISM EXISTS?!!!

Which is funny, because it is the academy that votes on its own awards. I guess in a weird way they are celebrating their own racism if you think about it.

and the last handful of posters ripping on the movie/selection/reaction to black actors winning awards

Come on, when you saw that you didn't get the sense at all that they were basically smelling their own farts? That an entire industry of white people who passed over some legitimate black actors/actresses over the years are suddenly now genuinely happy about a black woman winning one? You mentioned earlier how she was in the business for ever before getting a decent role. How about a guy like Christopher Plummer that went an entire career (decent one too) without winning? He got half the reaction.

yes.

and re: Christopher Plummer, he got a standing O as well. he was amazing in Beginners.

why is it so hard to fathom that Octavia Spencer may have deserved it?

They literally had someone doing blackface.

I have no idea if Spencer deserved it or not, but there's no doubt that Hollywood loves to pat itself on the back for being so smart and multicutural while really being dumb and bigoted sometimes.

Wait a second. Are you trying to make it sound like we're racist? We're simply pointing out the way the actors are attempting to make up for the racist history of the Academy by treating the black winners differently, at worst. But now we're all racist.

Since 1996, Octavia Spencer has appeared in 90 television and film projects, most of them small roles. If there's one thing these actors recognize, it's work. They think work is hard (I wouldn't know), and they certainly respect those who put in their time.

She works hard as hell.

She was fantastic in "The Help".

I see no reason she shouldn't receive a standing ovation.
