what could possibly go wrong with arming revolutionary islamic militants?

It would be easier if there was an example in the relatively recent past, like say within my lifetime for example, where we did this and it went bad so we could see whether to do it or not

So warplanes are on the move. NK caught trying to smuggle in gas masks and weapons. Russia and China order us not to attack and Iran threatens to attack Israel first if Syria is hit.

This will be "fun."

OK, I get that Iran is crazy, but what do Russia and China have to gain by pushing back so hard in defense of a country that just used chemical weapons on its own civilians?

They've been an ally and a supporter of Assad for decades. If they suddenly dump him now, what does that say to the rest of their allies? The US/NATO have supported plenty of s***ty regimes in the past, it's all just a part of foreign policy.

They have always supported Syria, it smacks the US in the face, and odds are the chemical weapons came from Russia or China.

Shouldn't we be working with Russia and China on this? Why are they so adamant about us not attacking? Do they think there's not enough proof of the chemical weapon attacks?

I think Russia is making money because they're providing Assad with weapons. Not sure about China. Probably oil.

They are an ally of Assad. They do not want their ally attacked. We wouldn't our allies attacked, either, even if they were engaging in horrible things.

We better not use this as our excuse to get involved in this mess (we totally will).

What will Russia and China try to do to us if we get involved? They sound upset.

So then what if we just sit there and let this continue for a while. Then what? Don't people start leaving Syria by the tens of thousands until the country is just about empty?

They could readily increase the aid they give to Syria to counter our moves and make it a much bigger bloodbath. They can prevent any international agreement of any sort on action so that there is never a consensus developed against the Assad regime. They can increase their support of other rogue states like North Korea to weaken the U.S. negotiating position with that country. They have even been known to use their supplies, such as oil/gas (russia) or rare minerals (china) as negotiating tools to force other countries to agree to things to avoid economic damage (imagine them cutting off iphone5c exports!)

That's already happened, there are millions of refugees. The international community is paying, somewhat, to keep them barely alive. The more of them there are, the more expensive that gets.

The other downside of doing nothing is that Assad and the rest of the world really begin to understand that there is no actual consequence to using chemical weapons in a civil war if the west doesn't have an economic interest in the country, and they start being employed and manufactured much more often (also increasing the likelihood they eventually wind up in the hands of terrorists). That and a much more rapid growing body count.

There is already a huge flow of refuges into Turkey and other nearby countries.

There's always the possibility that it ends up like Rwanda, the DRC, and other humanitarian crises.
