If Cowley is suspended that is stupid.

He's a f***ing sportswriter.

Sportswriter's travel a lot and have opinions.

People who dissent can call him out and put their opinion on twitter as well.

He calls flite attendants ugly? Big f***ing deal. They can come back and say passengers who sleep with their mouths open like sportswriters are uglier.

He rips the female pilot? Why can't somebody just come back and call him sexist and make their point? Somebody could point out that a lot of the medical personnel who treated him over his medical problem were uh, FEMALES. Intelligent, brilliant females. Fight back instead of being politically correct.

Why should he be fired for bad humor???

If he threatens somebody's life and MEANS IT ... fine.

he did notthing really wrong but represent himself like a sexist jerk.

Those he offended can blast back, but fire him??? Grow up world.

Hmm, maybe he should focus more on sportswriting then.

Just curious greg, if you talked to a woman like that while representing your employer, would you think that your employer would look the other way?

You DO work in a similar field, no?

They have to treat him the same way the would treat a guy who works in the mailroom who said the same thing in the middle of the Sun Times office.

Joe may have done himself in. Go figure.

I hope he gets good representation and sues the Sun Times.

They want tweets I'm sure.

They want their columnist to be outspoken I'm sure.

They want him to be a pseudo comedian at times, I'm sure.

And he offends women like a bad comic might (can you say Dice Clay?) and he gets fired?

1.) What do you mean hostile work environment? He was on a plane working.

2.) Yes but what I'm saying is he didn't tweet anything that would cause his firing or suspension.

Calling flite attendants ugly and calling out the pilot for being a woman?

He's a f***ing sportswriter. They travel ... a lot.

They can fight back and call him an ugly motherf***er. It goes both ways.

As a columnist he's part comedian. Bad humor, of course, but fireable.

America has been pussified. Grow up America.

As an employee you are always representing your company as a public figure. I know if my company found out I cracked off some sexist comments in public while on a work trip, I'd be looking for new work in a heartbeat.

But he didn't say it to the woman. He tweeted it.

He wasn't asking for a fight.

I'm sure he's probably offended people in print before.

I think his defense could be that he is a comedian at times as well as writer.

You're joking. You have to be. Seriously, try saying s*** like that in your workplace, and see how that goes over.

Its not about pussified, and everyone here but you and Marty realizes that its Joe who needs to grow up. And talk about being "pussified" - the guy can't say s*** like that to anyone in person of course, he's too afraid to, so he posts it via social media and he's gone before they know about it. Now that is "pussified".

Ah, so if you tweet, email, or write it, then it automatically makes it ok. Gotcha.

Quick look at his tweets. You all give me your opinions

Joe: Flight delayed because of "Mandatory Crew Rest." God forbid anyone strains themselves handing out orange juice off a cart for an extra hour.

Me: That can be construed as a joke. If a standup comic says that, it MAY draw a laugh. Offensive? Maybe. Fireable? Only in America. Give me a break.

Joe: I'm more likely to see a Squatch before I see a hot flight attendant. Then again, I think the airlines are hiring Squatch's to do that job.

Me: He thinks they are ugly flight attendants? Big deal. Again, this is like a stand-up comic's joke. Not funny, but fireable offense? Cmon.

Joe: Chick pilot. Should I be OK with that or am I just a sexist caveman?

Me: He said it can be construed that he's a sexist caveman. It's a joke, folks, albeit a bad one.

Joe: @SloaneMartin And when you come back, hottie up that pic a bit more. You look like the Russian icy villain from a 70s Bond movie. XOXO.

Me: That is the only one that's offensive. A simple apology, ala Limbaugh, should suffice. He could say he shouldn't have gotten personal with her in a 1-1 diaglogue.

That's the only bad tweet and NOT FIREABLE. A simple apology should suffice to the person.

Tell you what. You go on a business trip, and tweet that kind of thing in the twitter account that has your company's name on it (CST in this case). See how long you get to keep your job.

LOL, not to mention his twitter handle is CST (Chicago Sun-Times) Cowley.

I mean. Come the f*** on... it's a company Twitter account the moment he uses the company to represent himself.

I'm trying to make a point about America. Yes most businesses would be concerned about s*** like this I guess.

My point is ... WTF?

Joe is a columnist. He tweets, which the newspaper obviously wants him to do.

His personality apparently is that of being a prick.

He takes it to his twitter account. Aside from blasting that woman in the final tweet, which is TOO personal to do to a stranger, what did he do wrong aside from being a BAD STANDUP COMIC?

All this should accomplish is some HR person now having to write out a 20 page unreadable edict on what a person can and can't say on twitter when representing the company.

Seriously, attorneys out there, will Joe have a case if he sues the Sun Times after his firing?

He can say he was doing his job. A columnist by nature has OPINIONS and humor. Some people get it; some don't but he was just doing his job (he can say).

I'm asking all of your to go into each tweet and tell me what was so bad about any of them but the final one. And the final one gets u fired?? Cmon. It wasn't that bad to cost him a high paying job.

You missed the Asian jokes in there.

And when you represent a newspaper, you are damned right these are fireable offenses.

That's where we disagree.

Cmon. Part of a columnist's job is to entertain, crack jokes. We may not think it's funny, but it is entertainment. That's part of his job.

You know, when Mariotti got fired over beating his girlfriend he really should have claimed "I'm an MMA fighter on the side! ESPN wanted me to do this!"

Then it would have been ok

Legally the issue may be if they do nothing and fire someone else for saying or doing something similar in the future or maybe even in the past, they are probably looking at a lawsuit, not to mention the lawsuits they may be looking at from co workers who were offended by his words and aren't comforable working there anymore.

I do sort of agree with Greg here...I find it odd that they enable Cowley to do all this stuff, but only when something gets picked up and made an example of do they actually pretend to care. As ss2k pointed out, Cowley tweets stuff like this all the time, and his editors are WELL AWARE of that. They enable him to do that and enjoy the attention he gets because of it. Now they want to punish him in order to save face themselves.

Kind of seems hypocritical if you ask me.

Greg, why do you think anything is ok because of Rush Limbaugh?

2.) Thanks. You word it better than me.

1.) By citing Rush, I mean this should have a similar outcome.

Apologize as Rush did to the individual person and voila ... it's OVA. Problem solved.

Nothing else Joe said was anything but bad humor.

Kinda like the Marlins talking about Ozzie's history at his hiring, and then suspending for doing exactly what he has always done?
