balfanman
I had forgotten that Dan was originally drafted as a catcher out of Purdue University, however he was quickly moved to 1st base. That probably tells us that if he's going to reach the big leagues, he'll have to hit his way there. balfanman
In a park that leans towards helping pitching, the Intimidators' offense did fine. It all started with Dan Black. The 24-year-old led the league with 41 doubles and 98 RBI. He's probably just organizational filler, but the Purdue product was extremely valuable. This was a blurb in Future Sox sumarizing the teams 2011 season. He seems to have been somewhat of a doubles machine in a pitchers park. I'm not familiar with the ballpark, but maybe if he ever played at a homer haven like the cell some of those would be home runs. Between college and the minors, he has a knack for leading his team in that category. He also seems to have a decent idea of the strike zone and is willing to take a walk. Who knows, with the right situation he may someday be a complimentary player on Major League team. Here's hoping that he keeps improving.

Maybe he can have a big enough year to be considered just a little more than a throw in if K.W. starts dealing for whatever reason this season. He doesn't appear to be playing everyday for some reason, I'm not sure why, maybe he has someone else ahead of him on the prospect radar. Anyone have any insight on this? OilCan
Black is getting hot in W-S. A few more weeks of same production and I would like to see him promoted to AA.
balfanman
Update on Dan Black. 2012 Season Team League AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS WS CAR .294 79 303 46 89 15 0 11 40 137 43 58 2 1 .382 .452 .834 Minors .294 79 303 46 89 15 0 11 40 137 43 58 2 1 .382 .452 .834 Looks like he is having a pretty good season, although nothing outstanding. An 834 OPS is not terrible, but I did notice this: Splits: (Current team only) Entire Season AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS vs Left .350 80 15 28 4 0 4 13 13 18 1 0 .436 .550 .986 vs Right .274 223 31 61 11 0 7 27 30 40 1 1 .362 .417 .779 He seems to hit lefties pretty well, maybe he has a career as a platoon / pinch hitter against lefties. I also just noticed that he is listed as a switch hitter, don't know why I didn't notice that before. Anyway, I'll continue to root for the ex Boilermaker to make it to the bigs some day. Donaldo
A few more interesting stats of Dan's... He's hitting.. .342 with bases empty .252 with runners on base .224 with RISP Not very clutch this season, is he? I'm glad to see he's playing again, he has no statistics between 6/30 and 7/7. I saw him play a few times for Purdue, and I was thrilled when the Sox drafted him. I'd love to see him make it to the Major Leagues.

Donaldo
QUOTE (balfanman @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 01:36 PM) Thank you for the information. As a Purdue alum, I'd love to see Dan make it too. I went to Purdue as well, but I never completed my degree. Looking at Dan's numbers, his average with RISP is climbing nicely, but he hasn't homered in about a month. balfanman
I haven't updated this in a while, but Dan seems to keep plugging away. He's leading the Sox minor league offensive stats in several categories including OBP and RBI. It looks to me that Dan has sacrificed some power for increased contact, but I'm just going off of stats. I have no idea of the park he's playing in or any of the other factors. Could be he has noticed what the Sox seem to be looking for these days (he's obviously pretty smart being from Purdue) and adjusting his hitting style accordingly. He still has a ways to go to ever make the majors, but if he plays at US Cellular the power numbers should improve enough to be sufficient for a 1B. he looks like a doubles machine right now. Donaldo
Dan was one of seven Barons to play in the Southern League All-Star Game. He went 0-2 in the game, but he drew two walks and finished second in the HR hitting contest. Also, Bleacher Report has some nice things to say about him. #
