White Sox place Crain on 15-day DL

April 27, 2012, 1:05 pm

JJ STANKEVITZ

Jesse Crain's been dealing with an oblique injury since spring training. On Friday, he finally landed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 21. Dylan Axelrod was called up from Triple-A Charlotte to take his spot on the roster.

Crain hadn't pitched since April 20 and has only thrown seven innings this season. He's struck out at least one batter in each of his six appearances and has recorded two strikeouts four times.

He missed a good chunk of spring training with the same injury, although he opened the season on the 25-man roster and made his first appearance April 8 in Texas.

Axelrod has been great in Charlotte, walking four with 26 strikeouts and a 1.08 ERA over 25 innings.

Extra innings: Reliever Jesse Crain is eligible to come off the disabled list Sunday, but the Sox aren't sure if he will be ready by then as he recovers from a left oblique strain. Crain is scheduled to throw off a mound before Thursday's game after playing catch Tuesday.
