Quin
QUOTE (rowand's rowdies @ May 22, 2012 -> 06:08 PM) Be careful what you wish for... ESPN got rid of a lot of old timers and replaced them with what....women! Is anyone else tired of watching sports shows on ESPN networks that are 33%-67% women? They even have women commentators on basketball and college football. I'm not talking sideline reporters. I'm talking color commentators and lead journalists. Now there are some great women sports journalists that earned it. Jackie mcmullen, jamelle parker, and lauren cohn come to mind, but the equal rights bs has to go. There is no way most these young women sports journalists have earned to be where they are at. But they have a better chance being attractive women. Totally unfair and total selling out by ESPN. Anyway I know were not going to replace hawk with a woman but still I agree that unless the replacement is a rare talent, were better off with hawk. Jackie Mac is awesome. Page2/Grantland generally have great women sports journalists. ...but I know what you mean.
iamshack
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ May 22, 2012 -> 05:22 PM) I get that ESPN's target demographic is almost exclusively male. But seriously, who tunes in to ESPN to satisfy their dongs? That's just weird. If you want sports information, tune into a sports channel. If you want hot women, fire up the old Intarwebz machine. Why must your 24-7 Tebow coverage be interspersed with boner induction? Compartmentalize, people! Especially since Tebow already gives me a boner....oops
ScottyDo
Also, I'd rather have pretty much any woman off the street than Eric Karros ever again. He is just god awful. You'd think the standards would be higher for national broadcast than local, but good god...

rowand's rowdies
No women that haven't earned it on my sports network Steve. Just like there should be no know nothing douches like skip bayless or loudmouths like Stephen a smith. Why do I even watch ESPN...
southsider2k5
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 22, 2012 -> 03:58 PM) With MLB.TV on the PS3, I get to hear a lot of announcers. It's like a breath of fresh air, listening to people who are younger than 100 years old talk about the game and reference players from the 90s, and have conversations that engage me that I haven't heard a million times before - Hawk doesn't do this. Hawk's schtick - I am finally tired of it. You could just have a Hawkbot at this point and really have no idea he wasn't actually there. Cue up his catch phrases and have someone record player names in his voice. As for Stone, I think he's brilliant, and with the right sportscaster he can be great, but with Hawk it just doesn't work. The reason is simple - no one with Hawk will work. He always turns it into a dick measuring contest, cuts the other broadcaster off, and winds up telling me about some garbage player from the Red Sox in the late 60s. The tv feed needs a breath of fresh air, and someone who went to broadcasting school, a real broadcaster, doing the play by play, and then save the homerism and the baseball references for a guy like Frank Thomas to be the color analyst. I have spent my entire lifetime listening to Hawk. I have laughed at his calls for years. I have yelled "HE GAWN" "STRETCH" "HEEYEEESSS" "DAT GUMMIT" "YOU GOTTA BE BLEEPIN' ME" - I have enjoyed it. (not so much the "HELL YEAH" though) I am so f***ing ready for it to end and to finally have an on screen duo that entertains me. Let the flaming begin. Play by play is overrated for television. I don't need the game explained to me when I am watching it. I can't stand listening to broadcasters who are too damned worried about offending someone or having to face someone in the locker room after the game. Do I wish Hawk would tone down the act at times, yes. But I love having a fan in the booth. I feel way more connected to a broadcast that gives me that, versus FoxBot or ESPNbot. Give me a Pat Foley, Neal Funk, or Hawk Harrelson anyday.
claydude14
Maybe it's because I watch out of market, but I don't want Hawk gone until he gone. It's like getting to watch every Sox game with a fellow fan. Hawk makes me smile, he makes me laugh, he makes me angry, he's made me cry. It's going to being strange one day to have White Sox baseball without the Hawk.
BigSqwert
They should hire Gilbert Gottfried to do play by play and Rosie Perez to do color. Maybe throw in Michael Winslow as an occasional 3rd wheel.

It's just dumbed down PC bulls***. I have no quarrel with anyone competent in any job anywhere on the planet. We are just so far away from a meritocracy and quite frankly most women sports announcers and anchors I've encountered have been awful. Chicago White Sox
The problem with Hawk is that he dominates the broadcast and constantly cuts off Stone. I get really pissed off at times because I think Stone has a ton of insight to offer but his talent is limited with Hawk as his partner. I'm no Hawk hater but part of me is ready for a new PBP guy to team with Stone. Also, does anyone think Farmer would be an option? He's been a loyal solider for a while now and wouldn't be completely shocked if Reinsdorf pushed such an option. I just never want to see DJ in the TV booth again. I don't know why you believe you can impose your message board posting will on others, but you can't. You clearly stated earlier in this very thread that you were not at all surprised that the same people who were claiming they enjoyed the broadcasting of Hawk Harrelson were also making comments in poor taste about female broadcasters. Why did you post that?
Thad Bosley
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 22, 2012 -> 05:08 PM) I love Hawk and hope he realizes his dream and announces White Sox games until he dies. I love the catch phrases, I love he wants the White Sox to win as much as I do and even more during spring training. Every poster has been influenced as to how they watch the game by the Hawkeroo. I could do without his umpire bashing. I could do without the Jerry Manuel bashing that is still occurring, but for my money, I don't know how you would want to replace a guy that understands the game as much or more than anyone else you would bring in, and who would be more happy if the Sox won or as upset if they lose. ^^^^ THIS

See 1. 3.) Fair criticism IMO. Sometimes it seems like Hawk is in a bad mood (not so much this year yet) and says some weird s*** to Stone or barks at him. I think they are both great, though. Or Stoney will say something and Hawk barks out something like "obviously." Overall I think they are the best. If I'm listening to a game at work and somebody hears the Hawk home run call, people inevitably start laughing and saying, 'put it on the board ... yes.' He's great. Thad Bosley
FWIW: The Hawk signed a four-year contract extension last fall, so it'll be awhile 'fore "HE GONE!".
Rowand44
If ESPN wants to hire more Erin Andrews' or Samantha Steele's then I'm all for it. Go eye candy!
