balfanman
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 24, 2012 -> 09:30 AM) I think either Farmer and DJ absolutely hate each other, or they are the best friends in the world. I can't decide which. There are just way too many uncomfortable moments. I agree with this. I want to think that it must be the latter, but sometimes I'm not so sure. As someone with a wierd sense of humor though, I kinda like em.

That's good to know, they seem like they are. Wasn't Farmer mad at someone else in the booth several years ago, so much so that he built some kind of barricade so that he didn't have to look at them? Maybe it was Harrelson, that would explain a lot of things. I get the feeling that Harrelson is actually a real asshat, but I shouldn't suggest that because I don't know him personally. I think that it's because D. J. has the personality that likes to put people on the spot, in a comical sort of way and Farmer doesn't know how to respond, whether he wants to go there or not. YESSS!!!!!!! YESSS!!!!! HISTORY!!!!" It just made it that much better. Call your sons! Call your daughters! Call your friends! Call your neighbors! Mark Buehrle has a perfect game going into the ninth!

greg775
Could this thread be closed or moved? I think it's disrespectful and petty of the Sox fan base to be critical of a legend like Hawk. I mean WTF? This would be like Cub fans blasting Harry or Sox fans blasting Harry since he was with the Sox so long as well. We're not talking about Steve Physioc here or some unknown. I repeat ... WTF? Edited May 24, 2012 by greg775

Paint it Black
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 22, 2012 -> 04:20 PM) Note - professional broadcaster, not hack ex-player. This is a pipe dream. Hell we're talking about the White Sox. In this org, all job qualifications worth a damn start with "Are you a former White Sox player?" The sad thing too is, the radio broadcast sucks even harder than the TV. One game I got so sick of Hawk I lined up the TV with the radio call (with DVR obviously) and DJ annoys me more than Hawk. LOL, could be crazy enough to work. I'm not sure if AJ would be able to be both emotional and articulate at the same time. More of a nut-kicker than a talker ...hmmm....O-Hudson for broadcaster! Would work well if the game was happening at 2x speed

I'm just saying it's crazy and petty that sox fans on a Sox message board are blasting Hawk Harrelson. The guy may be the face of our franchise now that he is gone. This would be like blasting Paulie. It makes no sense and just seems anti-Chicago. The greatest city in the world and yet Sox fans (some of them) are blasting this legend in this thread. Weird. I just figure out of respect it should be in the filibuster area. Also, Hawk isn't leaving anytime soon, God willing health wise, and it seems dumb to arbitrarily blast him all season long (from now on if this threat lives). sunofgold
I don't want the Hawk to go, but if we trade him what can we get? Will the Hawk waive his no-trade clause? Maybe the Red Sox would take him b/c he has a lot of good Red Sox stories. What can we get in return from Boston?

winninguglyin83
Hawk called Butera Joe Mauer on a pop up in the second inning. He called Rios' double a home run. and he just called Willingham Mauer rounding third. Slipping.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 25, 2012 -> 12:32 AM) Where are you originally from in Chicago and how did you wind up in Lawrence? 1.) Hawk doesn't suck at his job, either. Cmon. He's entertaining which is more than you can say for most of the clowns on other teams' broadcasts. 2.) I am from Mt. Greenwood, went to Queen of Martyrs then Brother Rice, played basketball and baseball. Came out this way for college, moved and returned later for work. Used to hate the Royals, but now I feel sorry for them and enough is enough and I wouldn't mind them winning if the Sox can't. I don't root for them, though. Just don't care enough to do that. Don't like the Chiefs either.
nickofypres
QUOTE (chw42 @ May 22, 2012 -> 05:07 PM) I would love a new play by play man who can bring excitement without horrible catch phrases and mad homerism. I used to really like Hawk when I was younger, but he's nothing more than a grumpy old guy to me at this point. I guess the question is, who would you replace him with? Josh Lewin? He's doing radio games for the Mets, but I'm sure he'd rather have a TV gig. Edited May 25, 2012 by whitesox901

Wouldn't Robin Ventura fall into the same category as a "Sox legend," that we can't criticize him as a manager? Or Frank Thomas, if he was in the broadcasting booth? Greg, let's think about this for a second. Bill Walton and Magic Johnson are 2 of the most famous players in NBA history, particularly Magic. Do you think any Lakers or NBA fan would say it's unfair to criticize them for their downright horrible broadcasting abilities, which have no discernible connection with their playing careers or importance to their various franchises? Maybe Robin Ventura was picked to partially deflect some of the fans' dissatisfaction away from KW and the current state of the franchise. After all, had they picked your guy Francona, then they would have created more of a "win now" mentality and fans would be less forgiving with an outsider (comparatively, of course he managed Jordan with the Barons back in the day) at the helm. Or Bill Melton, for example. He's MUCH worse than Harrelson, he's borderline indecipherable or incoherent. Should we be precluded from criticizing him? Someone might express admiration for Hawk's lasting this long as a broadcaster with the Sox, over so many years...yet others would quickly say he's just not good anymore for the team or its future and not be wrong. At least with Harry, the Cubs were "lovable" and it became part of their brand and image. Does Harrelson add to or detract from the bottom line? I would have a hard time imagining many teenagers or 20-somethings that he appeals to...as opposed to fans in their 30's, 40's and 50's (and above). th0mas35
Long time lurker...infrequent poster but I'm 27...sox fan since I was around 10 and I absolutely love hawk. I guess your demographic is way younger than me.. I like the fact that he's a homer and is biased. I agree with others when I say it's sorta blasphemous to even attempting to remove hawk. Watching sox games won't be the same when he steps down IMO QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 25, 2012 -> 05:26 AM) So criticizing Hawk=criticizing Ozzie Guillen? Is there any difference? Even the AJ homer was bad, but then again, AJ had quit running and was still carrying his bat when it hit the poll, so I will give him a pass on that one. The winds were wild last night.
