It must be said - Hawk Harrelson has to go

The main effect of Hawk is making people believe that Steve Stone is some kind of genius.

I will gladly concede that Hawk caters to the casual fan more than the avid one, though, in terms of baseball knowledge. He likes to teach parts of the game that anyone who played seriously or has watched closely for a long time would know. My girlfriend, on the other hand, learns a lot from Hawk -- of course, for her Hawk makes a boring game a lot less boring and she's become a huge fan...almost solely because Hawk drew her in. I really think folks underrate this. If you're flipping through channels, do you want Len Kasper (or other faceless broadcaster) droning on about this or that or a guy who actually conveys the ups and downs of a game.

In the end, I watch lots of Sox games by myself. Hawk is like my old buddy watching the game with me. Sometimes he says things I don't agree with, are silly, or predictable. More often, though, I feel good knowing I have a guy who is at least as invested as me if not more and is not afraid to show it.

I can relate to a lot of what you're saying there.

...also with this once again rehashed Hawk sucks/Hawk needs to go thread (which we see every single year), the moment he's gone, you'll all be praising him as the former face of the White Sox and "miss him".

As Rick 'Wild Thing' Vaughn said at the end of MLII, "Blow it out your ass, loud mouth!"

Agreed. Just because I want him gone now doesn't mean I won't "miss him". He is the only Sox announcer I have known and he will always have a place in Sox history, but at this point of his career, he does more harm than good to a broadcast IMO.

What Jake said there was well said. I also agree.

Ditto. I especially liked "In the end, I watch lots of Sox games by myself. Hawk is like my old buddy watching the game with me. More often, though, I feel good knowing I have a guy who is at least as invested as me if not more and is not afraid to show it.". I agree so much with that.

Tell me about it. 5 innings into the season and I was ready to put the game on mute. I still can't believe the Sox have let him stick around so long.

Yup, my opening post remains. We need a pro in here.

Eh, that's not accurate in the least. Of course, the Sox would likely promote Farmio or some bulls*** instead of giving us what we crave (a legit broadcasting voice) so it doesn't matter.

I wouldn't have as big a problem with Hawk if he had anything new to say in the last 15-20 years.

At this point he's an old timey record stuck in repeat combined with a morning radio instant replay machine. The only time he was (and is on occasion now) tolerable is when Wimpy is with him.

Personally, I love hawk. It could be because I have only been a diehard sox fan for about 10 years now, but I find myself extremely bored anytime I watch another team play due to the announcers.

I love the excitement even though it can get annoying at times. However, hawk will never be fired. He'll be in the booth until he retires.

Ok, so who is this legit broadcasting voice you so desire, that is actually available and would want the job?

I think the reality is, when Hawk is gone, he's going to get replaced by a "robotic boring" announcer that couldn't care less about the White Sox, and they may as well have Apple's Siri or Google's Voice broadcast the play by play.

I challenge your first statement. Baseball is such a weird game with unique stuff happening he has to be saying "new" things all the time. Do you mean his catchphrases?

I tuned the sound down on the Royals announcers yesterday until I thought how stupid that was and I decided to listen to them. Ryan Lefevre (sp) isn't too bad actually. But Hudler was annoying me. The radio crew of Steve Physioc (horrible) and Denny Matthews (he's ok) is also mixed.

Stop and think with me for a minute. Do the White Sox seem like the type of team who would hire away someone else's talent? Or do the Sox seem like the kind that would bring in an old player, or move over someone who is already on a Sox broadcasting team? I get why Hawk bothers some people, but I have a very real suspicion that when he retires, we all will regret it.

The bulls seemed to have done well with replacing Johnny red Kerr.
