NUKE_CLEVELAND
What you think about MB´s first half??? So let´s get rid of Jon G and let him pitch for another team... His ERA is down compared to last year and he is improving. Next year he will get better, IMO. WHo said get rid of him? Why make up things? All i ever said is hes a disappointment. Ok, so you have lost your confidence with Jon G, and dont want to wait for his great pitcher to show up...if you dont want to wait, what you will gonna do??? Send him to the minors?? I think he cant go to the minors, so you will have to trade him. IF YOU FOLLOW THAT TWISTED LOGIC THEN BURLHE SHOULD BE GONE AS WELL. Im saying that we cant give up on a young pitcher because he is not pitching what everybody expected. He is progressing each year.

clujer420
He's 23 years old. He's just turning the corner. What exactly does "turn the corner" mean? If you take a look at his stats from last year (a year in which many people think he "turned the corner"), they are almost IDENTICAL to his numbers this year. An ERA around 4.60, and a .500 record. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't those numbers mediocre at best? And like many of you pointed out, he didn't pitch that poorly in Thursday's game against the Angels (in fact, by definition, I believe he had a quality start). But, the timing of allowing the 3 runs completely took the Sox out of the game. By the time Jon settled down, we were losing 3-0, and the game was OVER. I only had the chance to listen to it on the radio, but from the moment we got down by a run, it seems like we returned to our old ways and just crawled into our hole for the next 9 innings then left town with our tail between our legs. Also, someone said that Jon is among the best #4 starters in MLB. That may be true if you take a look at his "stuff", but numbers wise, he's probably middle-of-the-pack at best, and IMO, that speaks volumes about the status of Major League pitching if a .500 guy with an ERA pushing 5 is considered acceptable. YASNY
You throw out Garland's April, and he's been pretty decent. But the most telling stats about Garland may be: Home - 5W 3L 3.86 ERA Away - 3W 6L 5.23 ERA Make of these stats what you will, but that is a substantial difference. Al Lopez Ghost (old)
Wins and Losses mean nothing for a starting pitcher? WOW, I never knew that. And here I thought w&ls were a kinda key stat. What a starter has to do is hold down the other team until your team can put some runs on the board. When Garland lets a run in each of the first 3 innings, and then shuts them down for 3 innings, he hasn't done the job. Quality start my ass. A few more starts like Thursday nights and we will quality start our way to 81 and 81.

Jim Fainter
This winter Garland will be arbitration eligible. I will be really interested to see what a first time, arbitration-eligible, .500 pitcher is worth. Buehrle will have a bit more ammo because of his strong 2001-2002. YASNY
A quality start, as a statistic, is defined by 6 IP and 3 or less runs allowed. So, if Garland pitched 6 innings and gave up 3 runs, it IS a quality start.
