elrockin, Peter Gammons tweeted on Friday that the White Sox offered Soler somewhere between $25-30 million. If they offered that much to Soler, the same may be available for this kid.

Did anyone inside the organization confirm that? I know what you are saying, but as is stated later in posts July 2nd is amagic date and I am betting that the kid doesn't get hs needed paperwork until after that. I wonder when all of Cuban baseball defects :lolhitting Got to save some money for all the others

From the previous articles, there's supposed to be a workout in Mexico City sometime very soon. Looking forward to the reports, and assuming our scouts will be in attendance.

In looking at the story on this guy, he's made several attempts at defection before succeeding. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Raul isn't quite the hardliner that Fidel was. Wouldn't Fidel have just locked the guy up forever and thrown away the key back in the bad old days? Perhaps, the new thinking is that a few millionaire ballplayers sending boatloads of cash back to their remaining families on the island isn't such a bad thing. Gotta believe there's lots more Cubans on the way - great for baseball.

Perhaps Cubano could comment if he's anywhere in the ether.

PUIG is a much more refined and polished version of Soler, without quite the upside or downside risk.

Older, much more international experience. And I'm not buying the whole idea of Soler as a five tool guy. We have our own guy in Hawkins, anyway.

Seems like he could end up more of a complementary player (Leonys Martin, Leslie Anderson) than a superstar, but hard to tell. Alexei was supposed to be a Ramon Santiago/Juan Castro type of player and he was much better than that.

7-8 teams already in on him. Can't believe the Cubs would also go after him after all the money for Soler. 21 years old.

Physically, he reminds me of a cross between Cespedes and DeAza. The picture on the left, he seems heavier, like Dayan. On the right, more like Alejandro. Cespedes is kind of in the middle, more muscular, a bit like Hawkins' build as well.

Seeing what he did at 19 in their top league (.330 with 17 home runs and 78 RBI.), I think the upside is there, but who really knows?

Throw out any stats from their leagues.

Almost meaningless. Unless they had a particularly high walk rate, that would be noteworthy.

You're right, nobody knows for sure. Just projections based on tools. I'd feel more comfortable giving Viciedo money to this guy than $30 million to Soler.

I have heard Cuban pro ball likened to about our High A or AA ball.

I have heard this as well. Their top league stats are at least worth listening to.

Ruh roh! Ben Badler of BA has a tweet up with link to a suscription report but the tweet is pretty negative about Puig.

Report has a look at Yasiel Puig that's not too glowing. Only one team I've heard linked to him. http://bit.ly/MVhqUu

Puig could be jockeying for the big payday before CBA restrict IFA spending.

Pass on this one KW?

Must be that Theo loves him, and has started the competition-removing campaign. Kidding, kind of.

Looks like the Cubs are looking to sign him as well. Amazing they at going to invest a good amount of money on three Cuban prospects in one season for all of them to be in the minors. I was kinda hoping KW would land atleast one of these guys. Anyways heres the story (if you care) on ChicagoBreakingSports.com:

If the Sox can't compete financially with the Cubs for prospects, maybe it's time they consider moving out of Chicago to a city/sate that will support them and allow them to compete with the big market teams. If this craphole corrupt city would rather support the last place, over 100 years without a championship Cubs over the Sox, why do they even want to stick around. Move somewhere else and pick up a new fanbase. I'll still be a Sox fan and if they move somewhere nice maybe I'll even move there when I can retire.

Maybe because one of those prospects is a fringy 5th starter/LOOGY candidate...and the 2nd one they signed, we have another version in Hawkins that we spent 1/10th or 1/15th the amount of money, so I'd say we're going to get the much better ROI there.

Reports on Puig, 21, have been modest, and other than a few light workouts this weekend, teams are working off limited information. He was suspended this past season in Cuba—some sources believe it was due to his attempts to leave the country, though some teams have conflicting information—so scouts haven't been able to see Puig in game condition since June 2011 for the Cuban national B team at the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam. The Rangers are the only team that Baseball America's sources have linked to Puig.

"How can we evaluate someone like that?" asked one Latin American director.

Probably should change the thread title...

"Sox COULD bid for Puig, no idea what price range he will end up at..."

“There has not been a player as proven and as young to come to the States from Cuba," Torres told MLB.com. “It’s one thing to come to the United States at 19 or 20 years old with a few at-bats or some experience on a national level but this guy has years of national experience under his belt.”

Puig may not have as high of a ceiling as Soler but is considered closer to the big leagues. Torres says his latest client is the same caliber of player as Yoenis Cespedes and Soler.

"You have heard the other names because Puig was in Cuba and Soler and Cespedes were out of the country, it’s that simple," Torres said. “Before Soler got to the Dominican Republic, very few people knew who he was outside of his junior experience. Puig played in the Serie Nacional and was projected to be the right fielder for the national team for the upcoming years. Scouts know who Puig is.”
