The camera goes to Valentine every time something happens with Youk, fielding or hitting. I love it that Youk is shoving it where the sun dont shine. Mostly because Youk has taken the high road and Valentine just keeps talknig

Youk is the kind of player that, no matter where he goes, will always be loved by Red Sox fans. And based on what he's been doing for the White Sox, whether he remains with the team or not, he'll be appreciated by us, too. I doubt there are too many Red Sox fans that side with Valentine on this dispute. And with the way Youk has been performing, they most likely dislike Valentine even more. Youkilis has been a gentleman about the issue since coming over, and that plays huge for the fans...fans of both teams.

He was not good.

Good win despite Thornton. :gosox1:

He really wasn't that bad. Crawford reached on a dribbler to third and Middlebrooks hit an excuse me single right over the 1st base bag. Yes, Shoppach crushed a mistake pitch up in the zone but that was really the only poor batter Thornton had

Exactly. Not to mention if Crawford wasn't running, that out would have been a DP, and Shoppach never hits in the inning.

Or, if Crawford hit the ball a little better it's an easy play for Youk and they go down 1-2-3

Or if Thornton hadn't thrown a high fastball to a good high fastball hitter, Shappach wouldn't have hit it over the Green Monster. Good pitchers have to be able to pitch over the excuse me base hits. Don't get me wrong, I like Thornton. But he gave up two runs and made the game closer than it should have been.

If it were that easy, there would be no such things as "unearned runs"

Uh, those runs were earned. Look, I'm not saying pitchers don't give up unearned runs or give up runs after squib hits. That stuff happens. But you know that if that 2-run HR cost the Sox the game, the tune on Thornton would be totally different this morning. All I'm saying is that he made a bad pitch to a good high fastball hitter and paid for it. Everyone is so quick to give Thornton a break, but we'd be crucifying the guy if that had led to a Red Sox win. In the long run, no, the runs didn't matter because the Sox won. But next time, they might.

If the Sox lead hadn't been 4+ runs, Thornton probably doesn't stay in the game to face Shoppach.

I suppose you're right. Sorry, just playing the role of angry Irish guy this morning.

I acknowledged he made a mistake up and paid for it. I also pointed out that he really didn't have as bad of an outing as his line might indicate if you did not see the game. His performance was nothing to freak out over

No, I saw the game, and his performance was nothing to freak out over. But what led to the two runs was the "dreaded lead off guy getting on." That sort of thing can hurt. And it did. Luckily it didn't hurt too bad.

A healthy Humber will do wonders for this team down the stretch. If somehow Danks can come back throwing strikes and his velocity up for August/September it would be a hell of a thing.

Youk just doing his thing against his former team. And being clutch as hell.

I believe in Phil. He's a solid starter and a valuable asset for this club. It will be big if he pitches more like the guy from last year. Additionally, it will be really big if Danks really is on the mend. I'm guessing he'll need at least 3 rehab starts down in the minors.

It got on with a fill swing dink that died in front of Youkilis. It was a fluke hit that didn't go more than 75 feet.

Crap, I feel like Greg or Marty now. :lolhitting I'm just saying that the leadoff guy getting on can lead to bad things. It doesn't matter how said individual gets on, they're on base. I would argue that Matt had to try for the double play, but he did that. The DB was not an option with Crawford running.

I'm not going to argue the point anymore. Maybe Thornton wouldn't have faced Shoppach if the lead was only 1 or 2 runs. No matter who would have pitched to him, it would have been that much more important to get him out. It "didn't matter" because the Sox were up by 4. My point from the beginning was, let's not give Thornton a pass because the inning did not hurt us in the end. He's a veteran pitcher, and he made a mistake.

So over the past two days that is 12.2 IP by the starters, and 3ER. We shall not talk about the lefties out of the pen, though Thornton had only one ball hit hard against him.

What I attribute this issue of our relief pitchers getting banged around some is more the All-Star break then anything. Pitchers needs to pitch on a regular routine to stay sharp. Thonton didn't throw for maybe a week correct? Make some close mistakes with pitches because you aren't sharp and you get hit. Next game he probably is right on. I hope that goes for the others too

I'm not that worried about Thornton. With a lead like that, you're gonna be more aggressive than usual when pitching. Makes more sense to challenge the hitter with a fastball, given that even throwing a cookie is going to result in an out most of the time.
