caulfield12
I need to meet my good Thai friend and her daughter somewhere downtown/Loop area for lunch before the Sox game next WED. Any recommendations? Don't want to go too far to the North...since we will probably meet between and 11 and 1130.

caulfield12
Just found out she's coming from Evanston. At one point, I was thinking of going to Shedd Aquarium at 1000 am but then that would make for a long day of it...having to get up and drive 3 1/2 hours at 6 or 630 a.m., then being out in the sun all day and driving back home. Star of Siam if you want thai. But agreed... if SHE'S thai... she may want something else, no?

caulfield12
No, no. She's very well travelled. It's because I haven't had Thai food in ages (my city in China just has one so-so Thai place) and my friend's father hasn't tried it before. She's been here for 3 months, and has been to Chicago many times, so she's used to "American food," whatever that means. And her daughter hates fast food places like KFC, which is odd for a Thai teenager. But you're right...she might not want it, she was never the type to cook, so I'm sure she is always eating out since she's been in Chicago. If I was to throw out a suggestion in the touristy/nice places in the downtown area I would say Purple Pig is up there. And its so funny that in chicago there is actually pretty good thai food, but our chinese food is essentially garbage outside of chinatown. I cant figure it out. You have to be careful eating Chinese food in China Town, too...growing up in the area...90% of those places should be condemned/shut down by the health department. There are some good Chinese places outside of China Town, too...but most Chinese food tends to be meh, IMO. I've been to many places...and I know bad chinese food...and I know good chinese food...but I've yet to find great chinese food, say, compared to having amazing sushi and just good sushi... Totally agree. In NYC I feel like you can walk by a dozen very good chinese food places regardless of location and here is very ugh. I have one or two places I order from in China town that are pretty legit.
IlliniKrush
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 09:27 AM) AH, so you are the one person who likes their thai food? I actually like a shack on Taylor called golden thai. It's one my wife gets, that's really the only reason I know it. I'm the furthest thing from a "foodie." There's some other one around here she didn't like - but maybe I'm confusing the one she does like with the one she doesn't. I'll have to tell her about golden thai. daa84
it's after the fact now, but star of Siam is good. Opart thai house at 19th and state in south loop (also have location in Lincoln square) is the best Thai I've ever had and it's not even close. Perfect place before a sox game cuz its on the way to the park
caulfield12
We went to Ming Hin (DIM SUM) at 2168 South Wacker because of its proximity to the ballpark. Really good, authentic Chinese food. There's actually a row of good Chinese restaurants there (Ming Hin is the furthest to the westside of that long building)...maybe $1.75/hour to park. Thanks for the recommendations. Would definitely like to try The Purple Pig sometime when there's not a time crunch.
