Not one mention of Tanks catch...dude saved a couple runs there.

Every time I see him make a play like that I'm more thankful that he's out there. He's very aggresive, and sometimes that may get him in trouble. But I feel that he's only going to get better as a hitter and a fielder.

It's not just one game, although had he been terrible the attitude would be different. What we (well, the Sox really) have to look at is the potential. The guy definitely has the potential to be a great pitcher. He's shown flashes of brilliance in the past. If he can get his walks under control, he's that much better. He can throw a ton of pitches, and having better control will allow those 120 pitches to occur over 8 innings instead of 6. Regardless, we're not talking about a guy who's going to get $20MM a year like Grienke. The Sox could sign Liriano for around $8MM to $10MM a year. If that happens, great. We'd have a guy who can eat innings, be a solid guy in the rotation, and have the occasional brilliant game.

Kind of like....oh, I don't know.....Gavin Floyd.

We certainly do get excited over one game don't we?

Not really. I'm looking more at his last 2 months and the fact that you know what you're getting. We're probably going to lose Peavy and trading Floyd is likely, so I'd like to add another vet to the rotation for next year. Other than Sale and Danks, I don't really trust any of the other guys for next year. Given that he's seemingly turned it around since late May, and now that Coop will be able to work with him, I'd feel comfortable exploring options to give him an extension.

Now, Balta, if you're talking $10M/yr, then no. I'm not sure that's what I'd consider fair. But are teams really going to give a guy that much who has had a 5+ ERA for most of the last few years? Given how low his actual trade value was (i.e. How much other teams think of him too), I didn't think he'd be getting that much on the open market.

Yes. Like a left-handed version of Floyd.

Except Gavin Floyd has not put up an ERA above 4.37 since 2007, whereas Liriano has had an ERA over 5 for three of the last four seasons. And that's with Floyd pitching in the Cell.

This ought to tell you something about how much worse Liriano has been than Floyd. And it's a great illustration of why I'm skeptical of the "Sign Liriano" movement.

The difference is Liriano is the prototypical guy that Cooper has been able to make a difference with, which Floyd has been here for 5 seasons with Coop now.

This is why I specifically mentioned that I wanted to see what the effect of Cooper's tweaks would be before signing him.

I'd like to see that too, but the issue there is...if Cooper has some serious effect on him down the stretch, it makes the money you gamble on him a lot higher

Like I said, that is why after the season I go Cooper and ask him what he thinks about trying to resign Liriano. If the guy hasn't figured it out yet, there is a chance that he is just a guy who doesn't listen to coaching.
