Don't think I've ever seen a photography thread on this board. I'm in need of some advice for anyone else out there that dabbles in the endless money pit of digital photography. I've had a Nikon D5000 for a few years and bought a couple extra lenses which have worked well. With a new baby i'm noticing more and more the need for some kind of bounce flash to get good indoor shots.

I'm looking at the SB 400, which can be had for about $120 on Amazon or the SB 700 which is about $330 on Amazon. A big step up in options - the ability to swivel and bounce the flash even when taking a vertical shot, as well as the ability to manually (and automatically) adjust the power of the flash. Obviously $200 bucks is quite the step up for those features.

Anyone buy a flash recently and have any thoughts? I know there are off brands of this stuff too. Not sure if anyone has experience with those.

Thanks!

How do you post photos from dropbox? Mine never work.

edit: great shots

Put them in your /public directory, then on the website, you right click them and request a public link.

Great shots!

Also, is that you in the kayak shot or fictional mass murderer Michael Myers?

Since he claims to be the photographer, it must be Michael Myers.

Well at least Michael appears to be rowing away from him....or then again....he is turning his head around. Hurry and run Harlan!!

I'm pretty sure he just stole these from Field & Stream anyways...

Sorry for accidentally taking credit for those...they're not mine, but they really are from my camping trips!

My friend Chris, that goes on all of my camping trips is a pro, he's like my personal photographer to catalog our trips. ;D Two other friends of mine are professionals, too, who also come with. It's often camera fest photography extravaganzas on these trips. The person in the Kayak is my other friend Drew, who is probably the most knowledgeable about photography of the three of them.

For these images, I believe he used the following (Keep in mind the actual size of those images is upwards of 2500x1700 but I figured that's a bit too big to post here). ;)

The camera body is a Canon 1D MK4.

The lenses are Canon 100mm-400mm L, 24mm-105mm L, or a wide 14mm L.

The software is Aperture 3 or Lightroom 3.

That body and those lenses are probably around 10 grand. All together, those three probably have over 40 thousand dollars worth of camera equipment on any given trip we go on. I just show up and watch...then I get to show off the images, and apparently take credit for them for a little while. ;)

Oh, they upgraded their equipment countless times over the years to get to where they are. When they started out in about 2004, they had simple point and shoots...

The camera they usually tell people to get when they start getting serious about photography is a Rebel T3i, they can take shots with those almost as good as with their professional stuff.

yeah, those are some fantastic shots, I guess I shoulda known they didn't come from you :P

They just as easily could have been...I know how to use a camera considering how often I'm around those guys...but with the three of them already doing it, I feel no reason to jump on board that bandwagon.

I do have a Rebel T1i though, and a few of the same lenses they have, but that's my wife's stuff...not mine.

I took some photog classes in high school and college, but I've never had a really nice camera. Never been interested enough to buy a $900 camera. I just have a solid point-and-shoot that I pretty much just use for sporting events. I actually do take a LOT of great sports pictures, timing wise, but since my camera is just decent, they aren't amazing pictures. But I do have a knack for well-timed sports pictures or anticipating the action.

I hope you guys can see these pics off my FB page.....

This isn't a great pic, but I think it's funny I had to educate my class about who R.A. Dickey was while we were reporting at Spring Training, and then he happens to go on to have an amazing season, and now they ALL know who he is. Snapped a few good pics of him gripping the knuckleball, but this was the most clear/framed up......

Only because I know some of you would really appreciate this........our boy!

This picture just amuses me. Youkilis mocking Papelbon's routine on the mound while everyone else is having a meeting, Middlebrooks laughing along with me.....

My brother putting the moves on the goalie. I have another pic of the next frame, but it's a little blurry. The lighting in hockey rinks are TERRRRRIBLE....

Another Camelback pic. Quentin doing yard work.....

I added some effects to this shot. This is Brady Quinn to Jeff Samardzija in a game against Stanford....

I obviously added some effects to this one too. This is Jon Carlson catching a TD in the endzone, 1-handed.

I have this picture framed along with my ticket, and picture of me and the people I went with.....can you tell which historic game this is...?

Not a sports pic, obviously, but I just like this. I took this on our Smokey Mountains vacation....

This was a great capture here, the timing was pretty much perfect, the only thing that held you back was your equipment. With a better camera, you could probably be doing some really amazing action shots. That's not to say these aren't...but from the looks of it, you've outgrown the stuff you use.

Thanks. Yeah, like I said, my timing is pretty damn good in most sports pics I take, it's just my camera isn't good enough to capture them cleanly. I've taken many well-timed pictures that are blurry, so I have to delete them.
