Just looked it up on Baseball Cube and it seems as though there are two different pitchers named Josh Fields. One was a 23rd round pick of the Sox in 2001 and last pitched in the Atlantic League in 2008. The other was a first round pick of Seattle in 2008 and spent 2012 in the Red Sox system. I'm honestly surprised they keep using a 40 man slot for Anthony Carter. I haven't see or read anything in recent years to suggest he's worth protecting over some guys who aren't protected. Morel put up an OPS of .524 in the minors and was hurt for the better part of the year. There's no need to have him on the roster when he's not even going to be of much use on defense.
