The Tigers missed a chance Thursday to impose scoreboard psychology on the White Sox.

If they had won, their victory would glow on the out-of-town scoreboard at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., for the White Sox to ponder during their game against the Royals on Thursday night.

The White Sox could have been thinking, "If we lose, we're only a game ahead of the Tigers, and now we've got this long flight tonight to Anaheim ..."

But the Tigers lost to the A's, so the White Sox knew that if they lost in Kansas City on Thursday night, their lead on the Tigers would remain two games. With the White Sox visiting the Angels for the next three days in California, the Tigers have more chances for scoreboard psychology.

On all three days this weekend, the Tigers' game against the Twins at Comerica Park will begin at least a few hours before Chicago's game. The Tigers can have a win posted on the scoreboard at Angel Stadium while the White Sox are trying to beat the formidable Angels.

Former Mets general manager Steve Phillips has seen the Angels play regularly this year on a broadcasting assignment, including twice this week. "The Angels are a dynamic offensive team, the best offensive team in the AL since June 1," Phillips said by phone Thursday. "And their starting pitching is back on track."

These next three days might be the Tigers' best chance to pull even with the White Sox. Beginning Monday, the Sox will play two of their three remaining series against the Indians. But this scoreboard psychology only works if the Tigers win. If they lose, then it's like the White Sox are playing later that day in Anaheim with house money -- their lead can't shrink. It only can grow.

And I can hear what Sparky Anderson would say: "If we don't catch the ball better, you can take that psychology and file it."

Season begins tonight. No more games against KC making the Sox and their fandom think they are pretenders. No more games against Detroit unless there's a 1-game playoff. Time to put up or shut up. Odds are currently stacked against the Sox this weekend. I think most reasonable people expect 2 losses in Anaheim coupled with 3 Detroit wins. So prove people wrong, White Sox. Make the playoffs and prove all the fans who took the summer off and didn't flock to your games wrong.

No reasonable person expects any team to sweep another team as a matter of course. It can happen, but come on Eeoyre, let's not get silly. People might expect them to win 2 of 3, knowing a sweep is POSSIBLE.

And did most reasonable people assume the Royals would sweep Detroit, the Sox would sweep the Yankees, Cleveland would win 2 of 3 in Detroit, etc?

Detroit doesn't have Verlander or Scherzer pitching this weekend, no way they sweep.

I hope you are right. The games are at home and Minnie is rotten.

Are they going to be forced to play a DH or get to wait until after the final day of the regular season to make it up, if necessary?

That would seem to work to our advantage, in a way.

Because let's say the very worst possible thing happened, Angels sweep and the Tigers won 2 games (and one of those would be started by Smyly, Sunday, in all likelihood). We'd still only be 1/2 game back on Monday, and then there would be a lot more pressure on that final game for the Tigers than there is tonight.

A DH would or at least could ruin the Tigers' bullpen this late in the season. Porcello/Fister or Fister/Smyly would have to pitch 6-7 innings each, and Smyly has been used out of the pen recently, so he'd probably get Hector Santiago deep into a game, 4-5 innings...not to mention he pitched in the 12-4 debacle yesterday, 11 pitches.

There's a big wide swath of rain stretch from Detroit all the way west to Chicagoland. The most serious parts of the storm are in the Indianapolis area.

Now on to another dating rumor, which has been quiet for a while.

The Justin Verlander-Kate Upton story is making the Internet rounds again after they reportedly were spotted together Sept. 12 in Chicago, when the Tigers were in town to play the White Sox.

A few fans tweeted about seeing them strolling on Michigan Avenue, including chef (and Sox fan) John Gatsos: "Verlander and Kate Upton having lunch on Tavern on Rush patio. I wish Kate was pitching tomorrow night instead of Justin. Hehehe."

Bustedcoverage.com even ran this photo, purportedly of them -- but why isn't there one that shows faces?
