IlliniKrush
Sooner than later we'll have to replace our mattress. Who's bought one recently? What do you look for (besides laying on it for 5 minutes)? Anyone have the memory foam stuff - good, bad, indifferent? Never bought a mattress before, open to any advice on style, brand, etc.

Y2HH
Most stuff you've probably heard about when it comes to mattresses is myth or made up when it comes to getting a good nights rest. 99% of getting a good nights rest is actually being tired/worn out. If you sit around all day, and then sleep at night, odds are you won't sleep well no matter what kind of mattress you own. Some people like softer, some people like stiffer...stiffer happens to be better for your back...but it's all personal preference. Just don't pay too much for it...because most of it is nothing more than expensive gimmicks that you won't even notice you have after a week of sleeping on it. Kyyle23
Those memory foam beds are pretty badass though.
greg775
Those temperpedic matresses that are supposed to be good for 10 years are really nice. They have them in different styles, too, firm and softer. If you go in the store, the salespeople seem to know what they are talking about and can fit your needs. My back was bothering me and I got one of those and the back discomfort was gone immediately. It was pretty expensive but has worked out great. It was pretty expensive but has worked out great. Both of these time 1000. I switched from my old one at home, which wasn't too hot, to the dorm bed which destroyed my back. When my parents and I found out it'd be more to move my bed/furniture to Columbia, we just bought new furniture. The memory foam mattress has helped my back 1000 times over. My neck as well. flippedoutpunk
My back is all fudged up from my time in the Army and memory foam mattresses do wonders for it honestly. I have a king sized foam mattress with a nice pillow top and it feels like I'm sleeping on the Stay Puft Marshmallow man's penis. Also, amazon has great deals on mattresses. Ive seen king sized memory foam mattresses on sale for $390 with free shipping. Edited September 25, 2012 by flippedoutpunk

RockRaines
I was wary about the memory foam but its actually awesome after you break it in. Also, go into the store and ask about sales, you'll get one half off if not more on any mattress. I have my pillow top for under 1k and it was listed at 3k. Capn12
After going cheap for....as long as I can remember, when we bought our house, I finally decided to buy something worth sleeping on. Serta iComfort Insight is what we went with, after trying out many different ones. Yes, you are going to get sticker shock probably, but hell, you spend so much time in bed, at least make it comfortable. Cost: $1800 we spent.
