I think the Strasburg Situation officially has mindf***ed the Nationals now. Good job Rizzo. Good job Boras.

Yep, especially with their pitching choking so far, it's really going to make this a huge issue again. There was a report earlier today from a Nats player about how upset they are/were with the decision.

This is exactly what Boras wanted to happen. Make his client seem even more & more valuable. If the Nationals breezed to a WS title, it could hurt Strasburg's value.

Imagine any playoff team if their ace was removed from the rotation as a precaution, not because of injury. Any team would take a huge hit.

When is the earliest Strasburg can try for a new contract? Doesnt he have 2-3 more years on this contract plus arbitration? Is it really in Boras/Strasburgs interest to f*** over the Nats right now? Isnt it better to show off Strasburg in the playoffs so his worth is apparent?

It is more on Rizzo for allowing Boras to dictate events here(if that is indeed what is happening), but this was such a terrible plan. The Nats were way ahead in the race by June, they could have started spacing out Strasburgs starts and resting him so that he could participate in the playoffs, but they just pushed pedal to the metal until they came to a screeching halt.

Again it has nothing to do with Boras or Rizzo actually being concerned for his health. If they were they would try and get him to fix his mechanics (which is what is gonna hurt him again in the first place)

They blew a GOLDEN opportunity in 2012.... There is every chance in the world the Nats don't even sniff October in 2013 and this looks 100x worse.

I still think the Reds will go to the series but a Reds/Cards series could be heated and wouldn't be surprised to see St Louis back in the series. Getting great production from Craig and now have 3 top of the line starters while Cincy maybe hurt.

Nightengale: Nationals despised for sitting Strasburg

It was painful to watch, almost heartbreaking.

The Washington Nationals go 79 years between playoff appearances in our nation's capital, get humiliated Wednesday, and you feel like sending flowers and sympathy cards.

So why are we hearing laughter and celebration all across baseball?

The Nationals might have been the most compelling story this summer, but suddenly they've become the most hated team in the game.

After being embarrassed 8-0 by the St. Louis Cardinals and falling behind 2-1 in their National League Division Series, there was no compassion or a scintilla of empathy for them.

Instead, we kept hearing the same refrain:

They got what they deserve.

"If we don't win the World Series, I don't care who does," one general manager told USA TODAY Sports, "as long as it's not those guys.

"They don't deserve to win it. Not after what they did."

Said a National League GM: "I hope they go down in flames. I hope it takes another 79 years before they get back to the playoffs. That's how strongly I feel about it."

The Nationals, baseball executives say, brought this on themselves. They were the defiant ones. They were the ones telling the world they were smarter than everyone else, shutting down ace Stephen Strasburg after 159 1/3 innings, believing they were protecting their prized asset for a lot of playoff games in their future.

"We'll be back," Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said after they clinched the National League East title, "and doing this a couple more times."

That was the quote heard 'round the baseball world, with general managers and executives making sure everyone saw it. Who do they think they are, the Yankees? Are the Philadelphia Phillies going to defect from the NL East? Are the Atlanta Braves retiring with Chipper Jones?

What if the Nationals don't get back during Strasburg's stay in Washington? What if this is their best chance to ever get to the Series? How do you live with that?

And how would you like to be Ross Detwiler today? He's the poor soul taking Strasburg's spot in the playoff rotation, which in three games has yielded a 9.00 ERA with 25 baserunners. Now, he's the one responsible for saving the season.

Win or lose today, the Strasburg talk will never completely go away.

Nationals players, particularly veterans, have grumbled and might sound off more once they depart.

The f'ed up thing about this whole thing is they could have shut him down in the summer or had him stay in spring training.

It really was handled poorly.

I do think thought that they are set up for a nice run in the future.

Or Rizzo could have paid attention to how his old pal Kenny Williams and the White Sox handled Chris Sale. Give him some long breaks, and make sure he is there for the stretch run.

THey may be set up for a nice run, but honestly that can not be assumed. You need to try and win the World Series whenever you can, not play it safe for future world series. There is any number of things that could happen to the Nats that could flush thier chances down the drain, including the rest of the NL East getting better around them.

It will be even more ironic if he hurts his arm next year.
