Nobody in the Sox organization would support a full rebuild. We will always try to make the current team as good as we can, within reason. The Sox will be willing to have seasons where they don't have a great outlook, but they never will intentionally gut the major league club. It's not good business to rebuild -- you should be as close to contending as possible as often as possible. This doesn't mean you can't trade a Carlos Quentin or save some money in offseasons in which you don't like the major free agents, but it means you wouldn't ever trade an Alexei Ramirez, Dayan, Sale, Rios or other major pieces (well paid and not) before a season like this one.

I think they would trade some pieces like that but only if it was for major league ready prospects. I agree with the premise. They wouldn't trade them for prospects that would need time in the minors but if it was for someone who would contribute right away plus some others it could happen. The trade proposed earlier would not happen as it would be for too many developing players and not enough to improve the MLB roster.

You could trade a Carlos Quentin because we had a Dayan Viciedo behind him. We don't have those kind of player ready yet behind Chris Sale, Alex Rios, and yes, Alexei Ramirez.

If going the other way was totally hopeless, they might, but people need to realize if they ever do, it's a rather long process. The Sox were bad in 86,87,88 and 89 during the last total rebuild. That's with hitting the jackpot 4 times in the first round of the draft. By the end of the 1990 season, their 4 first round picks after those seasons were major contributors. That rarely happens.

As much as some would love a total rebuild, they would be complaining about it pretty quickly.

And even with hitting the lottery four years in a row, it took them until 1993 to win a division title.

It would be an absolute betrayal to sign a kid to that contract and then trade him within the first few years.

Huh? The first few years? If the Sox traded Sale in 2015, that's not a betrayal. It's business.

Business? Ok, but some business decisions are not good ones. Anyway why would you even contemplate trading your staff ace at a young age? We need to develop our own young players and keep them.

And I love that.

I don't think either the Cubs or the Sox would make that trade.

Let's forget for a moment that those players belonged to the Cubs.

Talent-wise, would you make any of those four proposed trades?

Surely, everyone would say NOT NOW, but in 2015, they would be much more amenable to the possibility if the franchise struggles over the next couple of seasons.

But some posters will be lonely posting over and over against the "mainstream" Sox fan waiting for that moment to come where a Chris Sale trade would actually become palatable.

And, in some ways, we were very fortunate that Santos' season blew up last season...as that looked like a puzzling trade at best, signing a young, somewhat proven reliever with great stuff for a "suspect" in Molina who probably will never make it as a starter with the Sox.

Trades aren't that simple though, it's not just about talent. A team's current roster matters, the players' contracts matter. The Braves might trade those prospects for Sale now, but the Cubs wouldn't. Maybe the Mariners trade Sale for those players today, but the Sox wouldn't.

Big day for John Danks. Results usually don't matter in spring training, but I'm sure he's taking the mound today with some purpose of getting outs.

Hopefully the reports are good when his outing is over. If he's not hitting at least 90 on the gun, I think he starts the season on the DL.

So one MPH is the difference between DL and starting rotation?

Mark Gonzales ‏@MDGonzales 1h

Danks admits he's running out of time. "It's going to be a long night," Danks said. Frustrated by inability to get outs after two strikes.

Daryl Van Schouwen ‏@CST_soxvan 1h

Danks can read writing on wall. he needs more time.

Scot Gregor ‏@scotgregor 49m

Danks despondent after allowing 10 runs in 3.1 innings. As for opening season with Sox said he "can't be burden on the bullpen every 5 days"
