Still, guaranteeing that amount of money this early is big. He's going to retire with >$100 mil in the bank guaranteed even if he gets hurt.

The Los Angeles Angels are close to a deal with free agent righthanded reliever Ryan Madson, major-league sources told CBSSports.com.

The deal is believed to be for one guaranteed year.

Madson, from nearby Moreno County, was looking for a chance to close, and he should have that with the Angels. He missed the 2012 season after having Tommy John surgery.

The standoff between the New York Mets and third baseman David Wright continues. And for the team, the risk is only becoming greater.

The Mets offered Wright a six-year, $100 million contract extension on Monday, according to major-league sources.

It is an offer that Wright is certain to refuse.

Wright, who is under contract for $16 million in 2013, prefers a deal of seven years or longer, sources say.

The Mets’ proposal offered Wright only a slight raise, and matched the terms of the Ryan Zimmerman and Evan Longoria extensions, the latter of which was announced on Monday.

I wonder what it would take to trade for wright; he's 29 soon to be 30 and has one year and 16m coming to him in '13, I can see him getting 7/130. I feel bad for mets fans they need to blow it up and rebuild. Next time they have home grown talent like reyes and wright they should lock them up for considerably longer and earlier.

Barring a last-minute trade that did not appear likely or other reversal, the Mets plan to non-tender three players by the Friday night deadline -- right-handers Mike Pelfrey and Manny Acosta and center fielder Andres Torres, according to major league sources.

Told #Mets' offer of extension to Wright yesterday was 6 yrs./$100M. Source today says team offering 7 yrs. between $125M and $150M.

Wright would be foolish not to accept an offer in the 7/$125 range.

Andy Pettitte and the Yankees are finalizing an agreement for one year at about $11 million for him to return to the Bronx, and the team is optimistic it will have a deal with Mariano Rivera by week's end.

Pettitte decided within the last couple of days he would return, and a deal would be announced within a few days. He suggested at the end of the season he would likely pitch again, but the Yankees hadn't heard from him until the past couple of days.

Another guy with a huge year at the plate in 2012 gets busted

Jeff Passan@JeffPassan RT @TBrownYahoo: Phils catcher Carlos Ruiz suspended for first 25 games of '13 because of positive test for amphetamines.

Not surprised.

An amphetamine suspension means 2 positive tests, IIRC.
