Being Polite or Being Nerdy?

Emily Post Question: I needed four tickets for the Kansas-Texas football game last week because I had friends coming in from Chicago for Homecoming. I made it my mission to find good seats that were free because, frankly, I'm not going to shell out a penny for Kansas football for gosh sakes. We're talking one of the worst programs in the country with awful fans.

 

I ran into my rich car dealer one day, who is a big booster, and I asked him if he had four freebies to the Kansas-Texas game. He said yes and said to call him the week of the game. He ended up calling me the week of the game before I could call him and I went and picked up the freebies at the dealership. He even threw in a parking pass in a very convenient spot.

 

The game came and went and my friends went to the game and had great seats (not that it matters for a Kansas football game).

I was at the store buying some stuff and bought a thank you card and sent it to my car dealer.

 

My question to you is: Was that a good thing to do, to send him a thank you card or was it nerdy and kind of unnecessary, unmanly so to speak?

 

Believe it or not, the four tix were worth 320 bucks (for a Kansas football game, my god; 80 bucks a pop). I figured it would be nice to thank him with a card rather than just an email. So was it a bush league move or a good move to send him a thank you card? We know each other and I'd consider the car dealer an acquaintaince more than a friend. I have purchased 2 cars there in the past.

 

As it turns out, I havent heard a peep from my friends who used the four tickets. I saw them tailgating and tailgated with them a while (I had to go to a couple diffrent tailgates, not just theirs) but no thanks for the tix from them. They had a lot of stuff planned so I didn't get to see them much all weekend.

 

So what say you? Thank you cards? Or are they absurd?

It's not in any way absurd to show gratitude for a favor.

I've always hated receiving thank you cards, whether it be from a wedding or graduation or whatever. They've become such a formality that they really have lost any meaning. If it were me, I would offer to buy him a beer or two. That's a better thank you than a piece of paper that's gonna be thrown in the garbage as soon as you turn your back.

I actually agree with both of the above posts. It's never a bad thing to show gratitude, yet at the same time I'd rather have somebody buy me a beer than send me a card.

A thank you is absolutely due. I won't go as far as to say a card, but an email, a phone call.. something like that works.

THere's nothing wrong with sending a card. However, whst is your relationship with the car dealer? Is he a good friend or just an aquaintance? For a friend I would definitely recommend buying him a few beers. I suppose the card would be adequate otherwise, but a few beers or a gift card for dinner would be even better...that could lead to even more free stuff in the future.

The card was something I wouldnt do but not out of line. I am more in line with sending a bottle of booze or something of the sort, but it pays to be thankful throughout life anyway. Too often people take advantage of people who are nice and it was cool you showed appreciation.

sending a thank you card would be a nice thing to do and would very likely be appreciated.

If you want that favor again, I'd say thank you someway. I'd go personal note if he is over 40. It really depends on what social circle *he* is in. But a brief thank you, the seats were excellent, of course I will send any customers your way . . .
