The Royals also tried trading Myers to Oakland for Brett Anderson only to be turned down, Passan writes.

Wow Billy Beane, did you seriously just turn down Myers for Brett Anderson? I really like Anderson, but the guy never stays healthy.

If the Sox mgmt thought they could get Mauer they would unload almost anything.

If that is the case, thank God the Twins have refused to deal him. That is a horrible contract, and there is no promise that getting out of Target Field would bring back his power.

It would bring some of his power, you can tell by the spray charts and what other players do when they visit.

Second, although his contract is bad, its not horrible. If you could plug him in at 1B for the next several years in US Cellular he would be worth it.

He'll be worth 6 years/$138 million as a first baseman?

Shields is a good pickup for the Royals -- even if they only win 80 games this year. It's really hard to build a winner from scratch in a single offseason. Sometimes it takes a few years of collecting talent and gaining momentum.

The problem is they paid WAY too much. This package would have been a reasonable offer for someone like Felix. Guys like Myers don't get moved for #2 starters making $11m a year for two years. Yes, prospects bust in general, but projectable hitters that rake AAA at age 21 typically don't. It isn't as simple as labelling him a lottery ticket like most other guys. This dude is a consensus top 2 or 3 overall prospect who is absolutely knocking at the door. And, his at bats will go to Francoeur, who was worth a staggering -2.7 WAR last year.

Another Sox example of this was KW dumping Carlos Lee for Pods & Vizcaino.

Ignorance. That trade also freed up finances to sign AJ AND Iguchi.

If Carlos Lee was on the Sox in 2005 - we'd still be World Seriesless.

So who is they mystery "lefty impact bat" that the Sox want to add? Cano? Mauer?

FWIW...Talks progressing for a guy that's been on the short wishlist lately. Conflicting make up concerns but when healthy, dude can slug and plays the game KW "tough". Deal has a good chance as of yesterday. Some risk but could be an impact move. Corresponding move(s) likely required which is the hold up.

Logan Morrison and Colby Rasmus come immediately to mind.

I don't want Rasmus. LoMo I can deal with.

I really liked Rasmus two years ago, but I've soured on him since. Neither are big time improvements over what we have right now though.

What about Choo? He's had off the field issues too and can slug better than LoMo or Rasmus.

Is he a "tough" KW type though?

Choo was so tough he skipped out on military service. I'd love to have him though. He'd make a great #2 or #3 hitter.

Grady Sizemore

He'd be a good guy for the Cubs or Astros to take a chance on for one year, but if the Sox are trying to contend in 2013, they need to keep Viciedo, De Aza, and Rios. I wouldn't clear a spot for a guy who didn't play last year and has been hurt several years.
